are liners necessary?

Absolutely, and there is some argument that it helps in the binding of the slabs and handle materials better as there is some expansion and contraction available with liners added and improves the seal.

Don't see why not, people use, brass, silver and allsorts.

I have seen at least one maker who use leather spacers. Can't remember which one, I think he was a french guy. I'll try and see if I can find him.

Most liners are made of vulcanised fibre. The epoxy will melt some plastics. The newer cyano-acrylate glues (superglue basically) won't dissolve plastic and there are now some brightly coloured polystyrene type liners available.

I can't think who the guy was, but when you think about it, leather handles are quite common, there is no reason why you could not use it for liners.
