Anyone need wood cutting?????

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
No worries - let me know if you ever fancy it - the stack is generally about double this

It gets cut in one mahoosive effort. Be a good chance to work your saw, my saws, the pneumatic splitter etc.

Can supply PPE - even chainsaw boots if you happen to be a size 8 or so. Some instruction, log benches, mauls, grenades, all here to be used...tutorial and lunch for labour :)

anyone have a half decent chainsaw for sale!?,...lol....

mate you gotta get down to Reds place,....

sounds like a day there wood (sorry) bring you up to speed with all things timbery,...

youd be an expert within hours,...

you should get 1 and we could go together Stu....;)

but yes sounds like a good idea, and i would like nothing better, but as normal low low funds...:(

About to start again ....dropped an annoying ash and elder that were shading out my gooseberries. Tree surgeon chappy promises a seven and a half tonner full of cordwood in the next couple of weeks......

I also need to drop a decent sized blackthorn that is tearing its roots out. Seems a shame to chop 4" thick blackthorn up for firewood though doesn't it? I could easily part out a 6' length of 4" trunk....but I have no idea what it would be good for??

So if you fancy a saw day in June Lannyman...just say the word :)

Its pretty straight chas, but bows (as tent pegs :)) are beyond my skill. Might make a spiffy sledge hammer handle I suppose.

WOuld a bowyer prefer it seasoned or green I wonder?

thanks red thats awesome but im away again...:( work work work......:(

i did manage to get permission to cut the stuff i was going to start of with anyway, my little saw works very well, but because the bar is only small i noticed the chain dulled very quiclky, it could also be a crappey chain of course.

the one thing that i did notice is that if left to idle any amount of time it konked out, not sure if this is for safety or not though, but could be a clogged filter or some thing, not sure...

that wood red is a wonderful colour inside and is tough as nails when seasoned well...:)

bows are made with dry wood too....:)

thanks again red.....:notworthy

Well, I wasn't being entirely selfless :)

Its not every day you get to wheitewash a fence you know

:)

It dometimes seem a shame when I run the saw over beautiful clean pieces of ash, oak and other woods and then sling it in the stove :o Trouble is its not the sort of thing you can post. I was round at my buddy's place last night looking at a lovely straight grained oak trunk some 2' in diameter and we were debating if its worth getting a guy in with a planking jig to rip it into planks....seems a crying shame just to section and split it for the fire.

Oh - if you are going to change chains, it might be worth looking at an Oregon Power sharp. I have just invested in a new electric saw for processing firewood and put the Powersharp bar and chain on. 5 seconds to sharpen it :). Not tried it yet but if it works as advertised, I'll be a convert!

Can you lay the blackthorn Red ? it'll save the tree and sprout up nicely :)
As for the permits from the forestry commission they no longer do them and hav'nt done for some time. to work on commission land you need NPTC 30,31,first aid kit, public liability insurance and work in a pare as your not aloud to out on your own. oww and all the PPE too

owww and NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO to the Oregon power sharpe is a bit pile of rat droppings !! it's fine if you car'nt sharpen a chain saw with a file or just logging up....but a file is and will always for along time will be the best

:: I suspected as much but its fun to try the Power sharp. I have to say the idea intrigued me.....what doesn't work?

I might be able to lay over the stump - but its probably 18 -20' and torn half its ropots out -leaning straight towards a wooden fence. I suspect as I relieve the snag it will simply fall flat

See if you can reduce it in height and weight Red and youwant to cut a long pleacher when you do, so you create a large surface area forregen of the stump. It’s always handy if 2 of you do it. The reason I hate thepower Sharpe is you have to use their bar, chain and the chain is poor quality. Each time you sharpen it you are heating the leading edge of the chisel andthere for tempering it again. The best bar to go for when you replace your oldone is an Oregon pro light and any of their chains, they are brilliant and haveused them for years doing tree work or coppicing/contract felling in the woods. The best thing that has come out in thelast couple of years is “Aspen” instead of using petrol and two stroke you canuse this produce that burns clean and has better health benefits and good forthe environment J..Been using it for a few months and really happy with it

I'll see what I can do with the blackthorn. Its not a big thing to replace if its beyond hope (I've put a few hundred thorn trees in this last coouple of years here). Theres a lot of blackthorn in that hedge so I might even put in something else for a bit of variety....

Good info on the Powersharp..still - its on my firewood saw now - so I may as well use it up!

Reading this thread has just had a random thought pop in my head; if the chainsaw chaps (and chapettes) here ever want to get shot of wood that's cluttering up the place,
find a scout campsite (or scout group for that matter) near you and I'm sure they'd appreciate any wood you're not using as quite a few these days seem to be lacking firewood, especially the smaller ones (campsites that is), or an alternative, if you've got large (8ft+) trunks of timber and a bandsaw jobby big enough, make them into spires/pioneering poles (~6" thick) and contact any scout campsites near you, most are always after pioneering poles!

Not a bad idea Lister, but in the tree world their is not sutch thing as waste wood as it either goes for fire wood, charcoal, bio fuel or loads of other uses...but stuff like that can be surplyed by a forester/underwoodsman/coppice worker. but i should think if a scout group needed wood and asked for it they would get it for free or very cheap :)

Treelore,

Missed your last post - Lincolnshire - Boston way. I have to say, I'm getting on okay with the Powersharp at the moment - seems to work okay on my firewood saw (a 321el Husqy on a 16" bar). Ran it for about 8 hours today and gave it a quick touch up at the end (literally a 3 second burst) - its now razor sharp having done maybe 20 hours work on that chain.

Running an electric saw for sectioning up has its advantages - I ran it inside the barn all day today in the rain and managed to get some work done :) Wouldn't try that with my petrol saw.

I guess as a (heavyish) domestic user I have odd needs compared to a professional - I know there are rules about how long you guys are supposed to cut for in a given day for example. But for me, its a question of assemble a large wood pile and have at it until I start getting tired - its not like I have to do it every day after all,

Boring job but a good thing to do on a wet Summers day.

Still - the log shed is full and I'm working my way through the 2 metre veg bins now

Could have done with Lannyman to spell me though :)

Fantastic log bins Red! Are they homemade ones from oldpallets or are they ones that they use for agricultural use? For apples or the like?
Yeah the power sharp is great for logging up or just crosscutting as that’s what we got are one for, we then tried to use it on otherwork and found it wasn’t up to the job and liked to try and pop off the bar..but then again hedge laying is hard on saws :11doh:
just got myself 2 new saws, a Stihl ms200 and a husq 560 with a 15" bar and 13" bar, both bars are oregon pro light.... just tried the 13" bar and wow it cuts like a dream !! :D

also treated myself to a new hygine set for my ear defenders as they ae over 6 months old

happy cutting
