Here's another spoon I made with mesquite. I ended up giving this one to my mom for Christmas along with a couple more.

I like the flow of the handle to bowl and how the bowl follows the grain of the wood, I bet your Mom is well pleased with it. :)
Pardon my ignorance but does Mesquite work like a fruit wood or an ash or oak? We don't get it this side of the pond.

THAT is one cool looking spoon my friend.

Fantastic grain on it.

Almost heart shaped as well, mom will be happy.

Thanks, guys. Rob, I'm not the most experienced with various woods. I have worked with oak, and I would say there is a similarity. Since this spoon came from a thick log, it was fairly straight grained, but mesquite is usually swirly grained and a challenge to work.

Here are the other two spoons I gave her. The small one I made on her kitchen floor while I was there on Christmas day. She cooks a lot and likes to use wooden spoons, so she was pretty happy. The wood is from their next door neighbor's tree that blew over in a storm. I cut it up with my chainsaw and just about gave myself a hernia loading it into my little pickup. Took multiple trips because the wood was so heavy. We heat our house with a wood stove and use pine and mesquite. The pine is quick burning and convenient. Then before bed we put in a mesquite log and it's still a nice big red coal in the morning.

hey Rob I'd say hardness wise it's more like oak I've used a bit of it I'd lovely wood but way different than fruitwoods and such. If fully seasoned when I got mine just wow lol
