In swedish it's called "Pestskråp". It's name comes from beliefs that it could cure "the plague".
I've heard of it used against migrains, but don't know if its any good, or indeed, safe.
I suspect it of being one of those plants that is OK to eat in small quantities, and the fact that it is very bitter and only eaten in spring as a bitter green vegetable at that time would naturally limit its intake.
The rhizomes contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids which can cause liver damage if eaten regularly in quantity, although the leaves contain only small amounts.
