I'm not a big fan of remakes but I thought the first remake of this was better than the original. Why Hollywood is doing it again, I can only surmise they are aiming to make money out of a younger audience.

The original film was in black and white and personally I didn't like it.
The later John Carpenter film was far closer to the story written in 1938 by John W Campbell, called Who Goes There and I liked both the short story and the John Carpenter film.
Will see if the latest version is as good.

I loved the first film (but I was quite young at the time) and the John Carpenter version is a classic, this prequel I'm less sure about, the reviewers I have read suggest that it a lot of things to make you jump, but that it is mostly a mess and not a particularly entertaining mess. I'll await a cheap DVD I think.

Carpenter's version get's my vote..........his talent & low budget know how (plus Kurt Russell & his incredible hat) can't be bettered in my opinion..............

Ok it may not be true as its Wiki , but according to wiki

"The screenplay was written in 1981 by Bill Lancaster, son of Burt Lancaster."

That's the screenplay, adapted from the short story by John W Campbell.

Read the book and about the only difference between it and the John Carpenter film is that in the book they had a plane and in the film it was a helicopter cos they hadn't invented helicopters when the book/short story was written.

Edit, more HERE.

John Carpenter's remake is an undeniable classic. However, from what I heard, this is not a remake. It's apparently about the Norwegians? from the camp that the dog escapes from at the start of that film. So it's a prequel apparently.

Will try and see it at somepoint. Never been able to sit through Kurt Sombereo Russells version, although as outfits go his bottle glued to his hand beats all hands.

It might be a prequel in terms of the story, but there are definitely scenes in the film that are taken directly from Carpenters version.
