Got downstairs this morning and it's freezing cold and fire wasn't lit. Turns out that there is no kindling in the house and the nearest stock is 100m away in the barn. Wanted to get the fire going and didn't fancy the trek outside in my jim jams. I've been doing some sewing recently (making facemasks from cotton) so had a load of scraps going. I also drained the bacon fat into a pot yesterday. Grabbed a bundle of scraps and used them to pick up a big dollop of lard. Wiped this on the log (Corsican pine, so quite flammable) and set it going - burned for longer than paper would and the burning fat tends to seep around the log and really gets it going.
