C'mon I could have listed some Greeks!
Leibniz and Heisenberg are all about the 'modern discoveries of science' and Hesse died in the sixties, none of those listed above lacked the 'freedom to speak'.

I think the last sixty/seventy years have shown that religion isn't necessary for good folks to do evil things.
