I seem to remember reading somewhere a simple classing system for trees with needles - can anyone confirm / correct this?

single needles - spruce
needles in pairs - pines

and the bit i'm unsure of - needles in bunches (lots) - larch / fir

I'm sure there was a neater way and firs don't seem to fit.....

1/4 mile from Bramley End.
I learned the single=spruce; pair=pine and lots=larch but take the Field Studies Council's Tree Name chart which is well illustrated, lightweight and stowable on walks with a more comprehensive tree book left in the car. They're cheap too.
