Advice on setting up a small charcoal forge please

Hi

I'm looking to make a small Tim Lively style charcoal forge and was wondering what sort of economies of scale you need to have with a charcoal forge to make it work.

We are in a woodland setting, away from a power source with an abundance of charcoal to hand. So charcoal and some kind of bellows/cranked forge blower are required. We are hopfully looking to forge simple tools, mainly for woodcarving and turning (hook tools for bowls, crook knives and maybe the odd small knife.

Can anyone suggest or throw any advice our way for setting up a simple low tech forge that would suit our needs.

Many thanks

Leo

try using a piece of pipe attached to an old bergan liner/dry sack.

place the pipe in the bottom of a hole in the ground/forge. bank up the mud/clay around it keeping the hole clear.

build your fire when raedy to add more heat/oxygen open the bag (the large original hole) to let the air in then crunch up the top and press down.

the air will come out of the small hole you made in the bottom wich is taped glued tied to the bag.

hey presto simple basic air pump.

you could also use a big thick plastic bag (thick bin bag type) just be carefull not to draw hot air in when refilling or it could melt lol....

or £4.99 air pump from argos

hope this helps....... chris....
