A wound in the wilderness unless properly cared for can become dangerously infected very quickly.

Obviously washing hands, the wound & stopping the bleeding is most important. Then dressing the wound so it can be assisted to self clean further & heal faster is advantageous.

There are specialised wound care products which can be purchased over the counter in pharmacies. For the care of wounds, reduce infection, improve healing speed and reduce pain during wound changes.

Inadine is an impregnated gauze mesh with petroleum jelly and iodine. Used directly against an open, sutured or steri closed wound. Inadine is a basic antimicrobial which has been in use for 170 years. Its ideal for wounds which may still be dirty or difficult to clean. (Used during multiple wars).

Guaze petroleum jelly dressings are excellent for burns & wounds they help to maintain a moist wound under a dressing while stopping dressing adhesion & reducing pain when changing dressings.

Manuka honey dressings IMHO are a miracle of the healing power of nature. Medical grade manuka honey dressings are used in the treatment of wounds & are especially useful on wound where there is a high risk of the wound still having dirt in it.

"Working in tandem with the honey’s low pH and high sugar content, MGO promotes natural removal of dead or damaged tissue (debriding), clearing the wound site while protecting the new healthy tissue, reducing scarring."

I use impregnated fibre dressing cut to fit the wound. Deep wound can be packed with cut sections to ensure contact with flesh, especially infected flesh. Ointments & creams are also available for minor cuts.

Before you decide that you know better than the science suggesting that this is snake oil, perhaps you should do some proper background research

Here's some science from Oxfird Health NHs trust Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust which runs MH services.

The NHS uses manuka honey dressings on severely ulcerated infected wounds in Older adults with deep infected tissue wounds.. these are wounds with necrotic tissue. You should smell the odour of these it's a smell you never get used to.

Is this an advert?

Curious to know what's special about the Manuka or could I use the honey direct from our own bees?

Science always trumps opinion

Of course no one is forcing you to improve your chances of survival.

I cut the end of my finger off last year.. (yeah I know) I cut the nail bed. I used inadinefollowed by manuka dressings on it after it had bled for 3 days..4 weeks fully healed. With minimal scar. The nail looks a bit odd on close inspection.
