A new handle for my firesteel

So I was at a bit of a loose end today and discovered an old firesteel hidden in a box of bits that I never got around to handling.
A quick look in the scrap pile produced an otherwise unusable bit of applewood that did just nicely.

I do like making things out of otherwise "rubbish" wood as it proves everything can be used for something.
I even decided not to sand it, which is a change for me, and tried to carve in some facets with dubious success.

Apple is the perfume of all things porky and clucky in the smoker BBQ. Chips are gold.

I like tool marks, a sure sign of hand made and not machine-mass produced.
Nice workmanship. Is that surface finish at all slippery?

Take a really close look at the surfaces of carvings from the Pacific Northwest:
You will see that many have a deliberately textured wood surface.
There's a pattern, it isn't random. I'll leave that to you to find.

Not slippery at all, it had a good coating of almond oil then left to dry, buffed and a very light layer of beeswax.
If anything it's now pretty grippy. 🙂

Good. Just the picture, I guess. Looked to me like the handle had been dipped in epoxy.

Try chipping the surface on the next one, do it in long rows. #5 sweep looks best. I use a Pfeil 5F/14.
