A morning bimble in the hills of Buda (pic heavy)

Dropped my daughter at kindergarden this morning and decided to wander off into the wooded hills to the North West of Budapest.

There follow pictures of the woods, many fungi, a bald bloke (me), some poo, the grave of an unknown soldier and a dead squirrel.

Lots of Oak, some Ash, some beech even a few willows.

Enjoy.

Is that a grave site with the ribbons Andrew? Is the high seat for boar or deer?

Great photos

Yes, that is the grave site with the ribbons, this picture will make it a little clearer.

The ribbons are the colours of the Hungarian flag, folks here usually wear either a rosette or ribbon like those during national days (the anniversary of the 1848 revolution etc.).

There are quite a few of these unknown soldier graves out in the hills and I believe schools and colleges take a tour of them to leave the ribbons.

There are both deer and boar around there however I suspect the high seats main use may be for fire watch in the summer.

There is a commonwealth war grave a little further away and I often rise early and walk to it on remembrance Sunday. Anyone who has enjoyed these pictures might also want to look at this trip report of one such walk.

personally they look more like boar droppings to me, most deer droppings are not bigger than acorns (fallow approx 12mm-15mm) but the ones in photo appear to be. deer droppings are often more scattered as well though not always.

That look great. What are the access laws like over there?

Cheers, Michael.

These woods are public land, open to all. There are many trails for folks to follow, some are quite long, others connect to very long multi-day hikes. Additionally there are several national parks and they sometimes limit what you can and cannot do.

Having a fire in the open is possible but potentially suicidal in the hot months.

There are few really old forests in Hungary, you would need to travel eastwards to Transylvania to enjoy those.

This photo shows the wood I was walking in this morning, it covers the left hand hill on the horizon.

"...personally they look more like boar droppings to me..."

There are usually more indications of boar being present, runs, wallows and the big ones leave deep footprints, I saw none of those, but I'll have a look through my guides in the morning, you may well be correct. :)
