Here is a quiz I just came across

Slightly worrying (but probably a sign of the times and not getting out enough) that I could identify all the brands easily but only 4 of the plants!

Brands are easy - they are designed to be instantly recognisable even when poorly drawn - the trouble with bad drawings of natural objects is that they are easily mistaken for other - similar - species ...I failed to identify which species of Pine is illustrated ... and is that Ash or Rowan? Sycamore or Plane or Maple?
Logos are useless if not instantly identifiable, leaves are useless if they do not do their job!

I agree I also thought the same when I saw this but is does get you thinking tho and I thought it was fun.
The interesting thing is you know what trees the leafs may represent even if the picture can not be accurate enough to identify an exact species , how many people in the modern world could do that

i like that, a lot. any chance you could PM me a link to the original fb document so i can share with SWMBT?

cheers

I am not sure how to do that as a mate of mine had it from someone else , I just saved the image on to my laptop then moved it to photobucket . I can email you the image if you send me your email address

What is scarey is - as you say- how few folk could name the leaves ...

Stu,, try right click on the pic and save to desk top, or leftclik and hold, and drag to desktop.

done that mate, i was just hoping that the original was a bit bigger and clearer. i imagine it's something that SWMBT will want to use in her college work.

cheers anyway dude

Me too, though I reckoned Ash because my Rowans are more lanceolate shaped individual leaves and more pairs, and I think of Hazel as having a wee bend at the very end of the tip.
Scary though that even on a forum like this one that we're only 'pretty sure' of the leaves but utterly certain of the logo/images.

cheers,
Toddy

Too be fair it looks like a child has done some rubbing/sketching , and its strange how the fir is a different shade , but if the original pic was taken of a juvenile i am happy with scots pine , not all that convinced with lime ( possibly poplar ? ) and even less so with hazel now ,

I would hazzard
Sycamore
Flowering Ash
Scots Pine
Durmast Oak
Hazel/small leaved lime/white mullberry
Grey Willow
Unlike logos leaves are "size critical" for ID
PS - this was done with a tree guide in my hand to get species ID ... but I can still not make up my mind on the one....

I've got 3 possibly 4 of the logos, and possibly 3 of the leaves.

Well I suppose that means I know very little about anything...

How many can get all 6 of the logos??

Hello there Ivan
Your right the brand logos are easy but imagine this " go back in time 100 years and show a country person half a dozen brand logos of there day and half a dozen leaves " which would they be faster to identify ? logos or leaves or both .
I come from a country market town and I am sure most young people there would not have a clue about the leaves .
