Decided to crack out the fishing gear and take a little trip to a local fishing lodge which is the first time I have done so in over a year.

I decided I was going to go for a simple rod/reel set up so broke out my Shakespeare Firebird XL fitted with 30lb line, a puddle chucker float and a size 18 barbless hook. Fished on maggots with breadcrumb ground bait and had a nice morning sat under the umbrella.

Here's some pictures:

All in all it was a nice trip and for 3 hours fishing I didn't do too badly. All the fish were in very good condition and there were plenty jumping the surface. I also saw some very nice carp which looked up to about 15lb but none were biting on the maggots.

I'm looking forward to getting out again as I forgot how much fun it was and how peaceful it was too.

Lovely looking colours on that last Rudd. Was only talking the other night about how I'd quite like to go back to coarse fishing, need to buy all new tackle though.
Just wondering how you managed to fit 30lb line through the eye of a size 18 hook! :p

Easy I bough ones specifically with a large eye on them. Always find it easier having heavier line and catching small, rather than having small line and accidentally hooking a monster.

Looks like a nice afternoon, just got back into a spot of course fishing myself. I just stick to float or feeder now. Thought the 30lb was a typo!

Nice one... 30lb line though? Thats ripping the a.se out of it a bit. :)

I've had a near 30lb pound pike in on 4lb line. Was fishing for perch lol.

You should always use weak hooklengths to suit the fish to give them chance to break free in a snag. 1lb for those fish is more than ample - to a 3lb main. Please don't go direct to hook from reel. Having a fish dying cos it can't break free from a weight or snag isn't nice.
