I don’t suppose for a minute that this is an original thing but it has recently been very useful:

Saw (used unopened)
Ferro
Fatwood
Thing.

Anyone who has been camping this winter and who has been dependent on fire will know that lighting a fire in the rain isn’t difficult once you have a decent flame.

This little folding tray tucks into the glasses case that holds the tools listed. It’s the bottom of a cocoa tin.

Using the thing, I can get a flame going in the shelter of my jacket or poncho. Then I build a little fire that can fight the raindrops and transfer it to the main event.

It works for me.

I like that, very good idea.
Is the "thing" something while that you have repurposed or just random bits that you have put together?

I always carry two small reels of wire in the car. The thicker is 2mm and the thinner is tying wire. The thing uses 2mm.

I always cut the bottoms from my (many) cocoa tins because, while they rightly say that they are recyclable, they will never be recycled because the tiny amount of metal is crimped to the cardboard cylinder. I collected a number for grandchildren to make Christmas decorations.

The red silicon sleeving is left over from when I made improved handles for my Zebra pots and Kelly Kettles.

Nifty idea. I always find if I try something like that on a small surface like you show, I knock off the good stuff when trying to strike into it (even when holding the ferro in place). I need to practice more!
