Hi all,

with half an eye on training for next years Fellsman, I'm planning a fast 2 day trip through the Dales later this month.

The rationale: http://cavehare.blogspot.co.uk/2014/05/2-day-camping-run.html

The initial planned route: http://cavehare.blogspot.co.uk/2014/05/2-day-camping-run-route.html

The draft kit list: http://cavehare.blogspot.co.uk/2014/05/2-day-camping-run-kit-list.html

Any suggestions or comments are gratefully received, either here or on the blog entries. I'll post back in the thread any further activity.

Don't know if it's of any interest/help, but I've been playing around with http://gpsies.com/ today for manipulating GPX routes. What this also usefully gives you is an elevation profile. This might help you with the route calculation things. I've only been using it for about an hour or so, but it's so far been so useful to me that I thought you might find it useful.

Looks like a good plan. The os get a map website is good for elevation profiles. Kit wise it'll depend on the weather, if its like June 2012 (hope it isn't) then I'd beef up the waterproofs and definitely take the fleece bag liner!

Good luck and keep us posted!

That's a handy tool, thanks :). It's worked out the distance and ascent for day one about the same as I did, but a lot quicker than wheeling the map wheel around. Day two is looking a little shorter, so I might not end up doing a full 100km, and with half the ascent of day one. Suits me :) If I'm feeling energetic when I get near home, there's plenty of scope for extended routes to make up the total.

I'll probably take more body cover rather than a bag liner - mid layers can be worn during the day if it's cold, then worn inside the sleeping bag at night too. The stove may yet give way to a gas stove, and if the weather's *really* good, the tent may give way to a bivi bag. I only gain 500g there for a big penalty in shelter though. I'll have a better idea once I've had this lot on the scales.

Incidentally, the cheesy-mushroom-porridge recipe is good lightweight food as long as you're not too obsessed with meat at every meal. I've used it on a couple of 2 day mountain marathons. Lots of energy in a very lightweight form, and very tasty, although it does look a little like a cow pat on a plate.

I'd avoid the port! Think I must be allergic to it as when I drank a bottle at a Ball I felt really rough the next day!

I'm just starting running again after a 2 week lay off (slipped disc and piriformis). Can't wait to up the distance again- Ingleborough is only 24 miles from here on foot and looks tempting!

Ouch, uncomfortable stuff :-( Good that you're getting back to it though. You've got some fantastic local scenery to run in. A 2 dayer across the Forest of Bowland to Ingleborough and back would be a good trip, there's plenty of scope to vary the route to avoid a straight 'out and back'.
