sadly, they are too slow for much in the hot metal department :( I've seen some conversions that have increased the speed, but it's cheaper and easier to buy a flypress!

I've only just got a power hammer but before that all of my patternwelding was 100% hand work. The flypress allowed me to set welds and draw stock out much more quickly than I can with a hand hammer. In fact I still use it alongside the power hammer when making 'mascus

like I say, get a fly press ;) The only way to get a power hammer for less than about 5 grand is to either build it yourself or buy a secondhand one. They often come up on French and German ebays and shipping wouldn't be silly.
