My big stew and snow melting pot died last month when the ceramic coating finally started to come away from the inside. At probably 30 years old and a freebie, I wasn't too fussed.

After chewing a couple of lumps of ceramic and not wanting to use it anymore with all the chemicals used to bond the ceramic to the steel, I left it in Sweden for recycling..

I found the size perfect for massive stews, melting large amounts of snow and boiling plenty of water.

The old pot

Wanting a new pot, I spotted a 6l stainless stock pot with a glass lid and proper riveted handles in Wilkinsons last week for a tenner. It seemed the right blend of being pretty light but robust enough to survive for a while. I knew I could either find a lid, or make one from an ally sheet.

What I hadn't thought of was whether an Ikea £1 style non stick pan would fit.

The pot set. (apologies if this pic is side on. I keep rotating it and it keeps reverting )

Filed the pan handle socket to fit the pot and create a seal. Pan sits inside lip which stops smoke getting in.

Drilled a 3mm hole in the handles to take some bike brake cable and fixed them in place.

Stewtastic.

It weighs 840g.
6l Stainless steel.
Cost £11 plus the old cable and connectors.
A carved stick fits in the socket so the plastic handle isn't needed.

Hope you like :)

Very nice :D

I do like wombling stuff together to get a nice end result.

Can't beat a good womble! :)

Good work Pete... I expect to see it bubbling away in the far north very soon !!

2 weeks mate, on the shores of the baltic :D

Excellent Pete. Looking forward to a big vat of Pike stew while looking out to sea :D

Om nom nom. :p It'll double as a radiation shield hat against all those abandoned nuke missiles in the Estonian woods :lmao:

That looks to notch Pete. I like the use of the fry pan as a lid goodjob
Cheers mate :) It'll make cooking life even easier in the freezer next year.
Good idea, very inventive.:bigok:
Thanks CK :)

Nice one Gill. I found the enamel pot incredibly easy to keep clean. Fantastic for melting snow as its impossible to overheat it and get that nasty taste.

Nice one Pete.

If any of you fancy doing similar http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130553603687?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 2 days left on this auction but they re-list, super value for money.

Cheers Rik. :)

They look good. The handles a better shape too.

Getting a frying pan to work as lid will be tricky though, there's no lip on the pan. No worries though, a seperate frying pan isn't a massive problem and saves on cleaning :)
