Yes but aluminum is formed the same way usually.

I have had (once upon a time long, long ago) a cast aluminum dutch oven. But apart from the colot it looked exactly like cast iron.

Without leaving it to corrode or heating it until it does/doesn't melt, I'm not sure how to work out whether this is ally or stainless. It's too big and too light to get an accurate volume to weigh it.

Scratch it with something aluminium, then something stainless. Then do the same on the items you used to scratch with. Then compare.

I did not know that - I will check it with a magnet in due course, although as long as it doesn't boil dry then there's little to worry about!

Just did a very scientific test...I washed the inside, then wiped out the inside with a towel. It had black marks on it. It's got to be ali surely?

Another scientific test, try tapping it with a fingernail, if it's a dull tinny noise it's ally, if there's more of a ring it's probably steel.
