G'Day all, sorry to be dropping in after so long for something, my life has been off the rails hectic for about 5 years now and I just don't seem to get time to get out on here.

So Direct Line say they won't insurance a car over 30 years old anymore.
Admiral can seem to load a Delica into their database correctly.
Adrian Flux will do it for £900 as long as I don't add my almost 22 year old.

Has anyone got any recommendations for insurers fo old 4x4s (or just old cars). Car has no mods currently.

I think you'll not get far with NFU. I had three Land Rovers with them for years until this year. They doubled the price on the Defender and more than doubled it on the Disco Sport - I get the impression they are trying to get out of insuring cars all together. The cheapest price we got was from Land Rover themselves!

Others you could try:
Cherished Vehicles - www.cherishedvehicleinsurance.co.uk
PBIS - www.peterbestinsurance.co.uk

PBIS were certainly competitive for my Series III

What ruled me out of the equation with NFU is they didn't cover my postcode.
Same with Brentacre.

Lancaster gave me a decent quote albeit I had to drop junior off to get it through.
I also got a discount for being in MDOCUK.
So Lancaster got the gold this year.

PBIS had shown up in the compare websites but I will file cherished vehicles for next year.

The other one mentioned to me was this one

My brother's mate has some Frankenstein creation insured with them that has a range rover chassis and defender body (or maybe the other way round)

thanks to everyone for putting up options, much appreciated

I've been happy enough for years on a commercial policy with Anthony D Evans insurers. They do a lot of horseboxes and so on plus my 19 year old workvan.

It's never been expensive enough that I've felt like changing.

At the moment they have it plastered on their front page that they are Which best insurer of the year 3 years in row and the first ever to achieve this, looks like your vote didn't get counted.

Maybe just because it's Landrover and the theft level? I got a good deal from NFU Mutual on my (company owned so a commercial policy) Toyota Hilux.

When I bought the Hilux (second hand) in April, the dealer was saying that some of his friends in the SE/London/Home Counties area who have Rangerovers/Landrovers are finding that at insurance renewal they are either being quoted silly money premiums or (more common) the insurers won't quote for them.

His take was that they are not just easy to steal, but they (1) break down quite a lot, (2) parts from manufacture are expensive and (3) they are popular vehicles around the world. So they are stolen and stripped for parts, many of which go abroad. Basically, the strong international market for parts makes them very desirable to a thief.

I suspect that if you didn't live in mid-Wales @Broch , they may not have quoted for renewal at all!

Mmm... the whole breakdown thing doesn't fit my experience to be honest - I've had six Land Rovers over the last 30 years, and all have been reliable. I know people with BMWs that have cost them more and been less reliable - I have my theories for the reputation but we won't go down that rabbit hole.

The difference in quote for the same car ranged from £2,200 (Adrian Flux) to £350 (from Land Rover themselves).

I cannot comment on truth of the issue, although those people I know with Landrovers have all had "issues" with them, of varying fixability. That said, it's not just Landrovers that are facing insurance hikes; big vans, some types of electric cars- they also have the same issues.

I'm sure the BMWs are pricey to insure too. The sheer complexity of many modern vehicles and the cost of replacement parts pushes insurance price up as the repair costs are higher.

Of course also depends on where you live and age of driver.

And I just found something embarrassing yesterday, out of Morbid curiosity I put a quote through on Saga....
.....and got a competitive result about £20 more than Lancaster and £60 less than Adrian Flux. The Delica has no mods though.

Yeah, if you have anything "non-standard" you need to shop around, as the "standard" insurers just don't want to do it, so quote a silly price.

You should try insuring company-owned vehicles in a fleet of less than 5....... only really 2 insurers in the market for that, although a specialist broken in my industry sector is a third option.
