Hi there
I've found that most of my sleeping bags are too tight when used in a hammock, which ever format you choose. I'm guessing this is because our bodies are envelopped in the fabric and preventing the bag from moving to give us space. I hate feeling tied up in a sleeping bag. I don't think simply using a warmer bag will solve your problem.

My solution was to get a Snugpak underblanket and use a military (centre zipped) bag on top as a top quilt. If you flip the bag over and put your feet in the foot box you can use if very nicely as a quilt. I have two of these style bags, a 2/3 season and an Arctic.

I really rate the underblanket, it packs down reasonably small and is only 1kg in weight. It is easy to install if you tie some loops in the shock chord and fix in place with mini-biners. It comes up quite high on the sides of the hammock, which really makes you feel snug. As I sleep clothed, I find even the 2/3 season bag has been warm enough for temps to upper single figures.

cheers
Gareth

I bought a couple of Snugpak Sleeper Extreme's for the wife and I - very impressed for the money, plenty of space and kept us toasty up in Scotland.
Only downside is they're a bit bulky.

I have a similar need for a winter envelope bag. I can't take being cocooned in a mummy bag, bit like a straight jacket! Not very keen on hammocks either.

Unless something really good crops up between now and pay day, I am planning to buy a Coleman Big Game Outdoor Sleeping Bag (£64.94 delivered) and a Gelert Fleece Envelope Sleeping Bag Liner (£16.98 delivered).

I know this will be a bulky piece of kit but I'm not very likely to be hiking far, I'm more the find a camping spot and stay for a few days type.

Id recommend an army sleeping bag, I picked one up cheap on ebay and although it is a mummy shape, it is very roomy and felt comfortable. Like you I dont tend to hike too far so the weight of the army bag wasnt an issue as it is very large (even in its compression bag) and quite heavy but its rated at around -15 c so will be plenty warm enough for winter, I may use a liner if it gets really cold.

Have a shop around as I know army bags can be got for less than £30 leaving plenty of pennies for more shiny things!
