you could use maillons, they are dead cheap £2-£3 depending on size sold from climbing shops, heavier than crabs but cheaper.

I use a set of lightweight ones from cotswald outdoors i got for less than a fiver each with the Full member discount. Cheapest I've seen them.

No affiliation ect.

You could just got soft shackles and impress them all hanging it a thin cord.

Buy a cheap climbing rated quickdraw - gives you two strong carabiners for not much money
