Just out of interest is anyone going to Dartmoor this weekend for 10 Tors? If you are, are you in a team, a trainer or a parent? I for one am going down. I'm doing the 55 mile walk this year (gulp)! The first time you do it you say you will never do it again, yet somehow you always come back again!

For those of you who don't know '10 Tors' is a 2 day hike across Dartmoor carrying all of your kit/provisions. Starting at 7am teams have until 5pm the next day to get back to Okehampton after passing through 10 designated Tors. Teams are made up of 6 people, mostly from schools, scout groups and youth organisations. There are 4 different events on '10 Tors'. Firstly there is the 'Jubilee chalenge' for the disabled (can't remember the distance). Then there is the 35 mile, 45 mile and finally the 55 mile challenge.

For more info see www.events.ex.ac.uk
Might see some of you down there...

Thanks guys, dunno about getting some photos Red, haven't always got much time to stop for a photo. Also the weather is meant to be quite naff this weekend : ( Lots of wind and rain is likely.

And yes it is a excellent experience, especially coming in at the end when you can see the finish, its such a great feeling.

I will let you know how I got on on Monday once I have dried out a bit!

Good luck, i may give it a go next year!

Do you think that you could post your route card after you've finished, i'm taking an extended weekend to Dartmoor in a couple of months and would like to have a practice run in prep for 2008 :You_Rock_

Check the ten tors website, you may find all the routes on there but they may not appear until the event begins.

Well I am back now and have dried out after a thorough soaking.
I don't know if any of you have heard on the news that the 'Event' was cancelled, mainly due to the swollen rivers which were very fast flowing.
For us things got off to a good start, we knew where we were going, had a decent pace and spirits were high. Got to Steeperton 35 mins early. On our way to Hare we got waylaid by a few K's in the rain and fog. We did get to Hare with wet feet after crossing the 3 way river confulence just below Hare but we had lost a lot of time. The route to Beardown did take a while however we did get there getting a drenched in the process. Beardown to Staple was relatively uneventful. Getting to Hartor tors was a rush as we wanted to be there before 8pm so we could carry on walking to Trowlesworthy. We had to really shift to get there.
On arrival at Hartor tors (our 5th tor) we were told we could not go on due to the encroaching weather.
We were then told at 10:30 that the event was cancelled and we would be evacuated back to camp. This resulted in a lot of waiting on Sunday morning until around 2pm we were escorted to some minibuses.
Surprisingly we were still given our medals even though we only got half way round the tors.

Btw Richie there is an age limit on 10 tors, up to about 20 I think. Anyway the routes are on the website (www.events.ex.ac.uk) somewhere although they may take a bit of searching.

I am still going to go and spend a few days on there anyway, and still think i will cover the route Y when i go out. Should be a laugh anyway

If you're going next year then good luck

Good on you for having a go, sounds like you were going well. Even at Okehampton Camp the weather was horrible, on the High Moor it must have been dreadful. Hope you get another chance next year.

I had two teams on the Moor and it was quite a relief when they got back.

There's a great image at the bottom of the photos page of the event website, THAT'S rain.
