OK
I'm in a good situation. I have £30-40, to be spent on a/some items of clothing. I suppose I could stretch it to £50 maybe, but it must be clothing (it's a gift of cash with that condition). I use my gear alot, and like to have good stuff. I already have good jacket and trousers.

So I'm really looking for is top notch items, probably a hat/gloves/socks/mittens or maybe some kind of insulating layer. Anyone have ideas/recommendations? I go out in all weathers.

A pair of boiled wool Dachstein mitts would leave you with money to spare from £30

I'd go for the merino base layer option. Don't know if you have a Mountain Warehouse near you but you could at the moment get a complete set of their merino base layer for about £30. from there.

An Akubra felt hat - though probably not from a UK retailer at that price.

Pendleton wool shirts off US ebay. Not as thick as a Swannie but therefore more versatile and very hardwearing.

I would try to find a nice bemidji shirt or a mackinaw shirtjacket of the evilbay (the US one), some nice finds to be made. Although I have no idea on how they perform in the wild, but I always wanted one of those. Maybe on the next paycheck...

Paramo mountain hat.~£20
Army surplus MPV socks.~£8
Helly Hansen lifa baselayer shirt or pants. ~£12 and £25
Marmot driclime softshell or pertex windshell.

Damn now I'm thinking up things to fill the holes in my kit list.

What about a Barmah leather hat or a felt Stetson.
I use these when a wooly type would be too warm.
They shield eyes from sun, let rain run off and if they fit properly the wind won't shift them.

Both c.£40-£50 I think.

I've got sealskinz socks in both small and longer length and they're great, but there is a country sock model too.
I haven't tried them but they look good, more like what a wooly/welly sock looks like.
I assume they're w/proof for the full length, which is up to the knee Ithink.

I would buy a 200g Woolpower Ullfrotte wool top (£40) and a British Forces woollen jumper(£10). I wear this combination everytime I go out and its been warm enough right through the winter.
I think some surplus stores have wool baselayers for sale which might save you some money, if you find some I would buy some merino wool underwear with the leftover cash.

Incidentally, I've already got a bunch of merino wool layers at a great price I bought a while ago from a source, so don't need any more of them. Will look into the other suggestions though. Thanks everyone.
