And, after reviewing the above, i might just plug that vent hole.

    Mesolithic Huts

"Do you happen to know what was found at the Mesolithic site up the road?" I do indeed. They found a few circles suggestive of huts, a few hundred flint and chert flakes, and three cremations. This is possibly one of the most significant mesolithic sites in Ireland, after Mount Sandel, in that...

    Mesolithic Huts

Michigan State guy is me. My wife played a concert there once, and picked up one of their cool hoodies for me. Alas, I was never there.

    Mesolithic Huts

Don't worry Spamel, I didn't read it that way. In fact, that's one of the reasons I posted in the first place, so other, perhaps more experienced, eyes could see it, and tease out some ideas and comments. Perhaps a fully conical roof would be even better, and might shed the rain more...

    Mesolithic Huts

"but I'm not too sure about that top piece of thatching due to it being very flat, although I am probably wrong" Well, time will tell. I guess if they were permanantly occupied, or at least seasonally, they would be more waterproof, since the 'dry parachute effect' mentioned above also holds...

    Mesolithic Huts

Show will be broadcast in Ireland. As for sparks, that's why I used charcoal rather than wood, but good dry small wood like willow seems to burn fine with little sparks. thing is, because the huts are made from thatch, a small, well tended fire will heat up the air inside and it stays cosy for...

    Mesolithic Huts

Hi all, I was recently comissioned to design and build a film set for a documentary about Mesolithic Ireland. Rather than building chicken wire huts and thatching them with plastic grass,as you might expect from them oul' hollywood types, we went for the real deal, and built some small but...

Dear Raptor, sorry for any problems caused. I thought, in my ignorance, that the domain register would be fairly public information. Sincerely didn't mean any offence. Not a great introduction to my fellow Irish bushcrafters, I fear. Argh.

'Can Fat Teens Hunt?' (TV Show of Course!)

The Iban should return to their cannibalistic ways, and eat the fat kids. If they're as big as the blurb suggests, they'd feast for weeks, chomping on all that soft, tender westernised meat. Yum.

Moulds and metal casting - not exactly bushcraft

I'm part of a group that does bronze casting using bronze age technology. Check it oout at www.umha-aois.com One thing to remember about lost wax casting. If you make a two part plaster mould, as described above, you can cast wax into it, and make as many wax positives as you like. Cover each...

Birch Sap - why is it yellow??

Anyone try making syrup from it? I read elsewhere that you have to reduce it down to 10 percent to get syrup, but I had to reduce it to about 1 or at most 2 percent to get anything like a syrup. It's also not that tasty, at least I don't really care for it. I reckon a less condensed drink is...

    Mussel shells...

    Wild Camping Ireland

You can try Knocksink woods just outside Enniskerry, in the valley of the Dargle river.. Beautiful mature deciduous woodland. I go there when in need of a bit of forest downtime. Le meas, Billy.

    Bushcrafters Accessories (Ireland)

There's a decent army surrplus store at the Curragh camp who make webbing for the Irish Armed Forces. They might steer you in the right direction.

    Toiletpaper in winter

"I came across a brown smeared £20 note on a hike once" Must have been some millionaire bank managers out in the woods a few days before.
