    Desert footwear

Macaroon, I suspect you are right, it might give me the excuse I need to replace my Lowa Deserts as they are falling about. My concern is whether they are taller and heaver than necessary which is why I am wondering about the Merrels I posted.

    Desert footwear

I've got some desert fox boots, not a fan as they rub around the heel, they are also pretty bulky so pose the same problem as the Lowas. I'm currently looking at these btw: http://www.salomon.com/uk/product/x-over-ltr.html...

    Desert footwear

Hi all, I was looking for a little advice on appropriate footwear for hiking in a desert and figured you would be the people to ask. I might be spending a month or so in summer hiking the Skeleton Coast in Namibia, we are doing several hundred km over the period and I expect long days on my...

Show us your cutting tool trios!

The No. 74. They are pretty good and I like the natural wood, I suspect it will break eventually so I might replace them one day or possibly treat them.

Show us your cutting tool trios!

I'll chip in with my set for this weekend: I picked up the Khukri when I worked with the Gurkhas a little while back (gotta love any regiment that bring momentos with them to give away) and have been using it for splitting kindling in my shed but haven't actually taken it out for any...

How to make non expensive char cloth?

Jon, next stop flint and steel! I find great satisfaction in building a fire using only flint and steel, I practice as often as I can even if it's only to light the stove in my shed. Well done on the char cloth, I tend to carry an altoid type tin with me and a stash of scraps of fabric, once the...

Char cloth on a rocket stove ?

I've made char cloth in a whole range of (hot places) and don't think there is such a thing as 'too hot'. I've used the middle of a raging bonfire before, as long as you take the tin out and plug the hole before it is totally burnt you should be ok. My one top tip is try to make a batch of a...

PCS Latest Issue Lightweight Thermal Smock

Our guys have them and they are proving pretty popular, they are warm if worn with a decent base layer and micro fleece norgie. I think my problem with them (and the rest of the 'layer system') is that what I tend to look for is a single item you can wear over a t-shirt and base layer that will...

    Frontier Stove ( Pic heavy)

Hi All, sorry to resurrect an old thread but a. it's a pretty good thread with an excellent review and b. I didn't think it was worth starting a new one. I am looking at fitting one of these stoves to my shed however I'm slightly concerned about running a single walled flue through a wooden...

Kit review and a sort of trip report

Hi all, yesterday I got back from a trip to Brecon with work. I was supervising a gold DofE group and helping a little with the training etc of practice groups so had a pretty busy time but still had a chance to put some of my new kit through its paces. The weather was interesting, there was a...

British Army Boots, same problem with 3 pairs!

From talking to a store man the other week it seems the problem with the 'Boots, light assault' was that the soles and uppers were made in different places by different companies. I've seen boots where the sole was a larger size than the upper, they fall apart all the time and always at the most...
