which pack are you using & why?

after years of backache using a cheap 45 litre pack i bought a dutch ex militery lowe alpine sting. Its the most comfortable thing i've owned. I've only used it a few times but its solid, easy to compress down, and big enough that if I filled it with pouches on I probably wouldn't be able to...

    Problem with grinder dust.....what mask???

you cant skimp on masks. I bought a diy/pro one that looks like half a gas mask and the difference is incredible. It came with "fumes" filters and you couldnt smell paint stripper, thinners anything through it. Youve got to keep them clean and sealed in a bag, and i use the original filters for...

    Home fires burning

A friend of mine got his double chimney from a place called docherty.co.uk (I think that's right) they gave him good service etc. I don't know the price exactly but 100 a meter sounds about right. I just paid 180 euro a meter in France, but I only needed a few straight meters. He paid 1400 for...

    Great nights sleep

My hammock arrived so I set it up under the house to check it out. Thought I might grab 40 winks and woke up over two hours later. Fantastic just waiting for a night where I can disappear into the woods.

    Home fires burning

thats a decent wood shed Red. I reckon we will be getting through about 8 cubic meters of wood in a year. Around here wood is about 50 euros a cubic meter, but theres loads for free if you have the time. EDF cut a huge line through the forest to give their powerlines some space, it looks awful...

    Removing pine resin

other than the liquids mentioned above, lighter fluid(napther) being my favourite, my wife tried babywipes when she got mastic on her hands and it worked better than white spirit even removing thin dried smears. You do smell a bit babyish for a bit though. Worth a try if youve got some around

    Home fires burning

I've just spent the whole of my Sunday installing our new woodburning stove. It's blazing away in the corner and has brought a whole new dimension to the house. I have pretty much always had a real fire in the houses I've lived in, the are the heart of the house as far as I am concerned. I was...

where do you do your bushcraft?

I'm very lucky as I live at the bottom edge of the Montagne noire in Languedoc France and I'm able to walk for 15 minutes and be in the forest. The only problem here is the hunters and the fear of being mistaken for a wild boar or deer. Most of my kit is either camo or olive so I have just...

    Great nights sleep

I'm waiting for my new hammock to arrive as bedrolls on the floor give me too much joint pain these days. It is getting a bit nippy, but I hope to get a good nights sleep or two in the woods before winter really kicks in.

    Fungus killing Plane trees

i live near the canel du midi in the south of france and they are planning on cutting down over 50,000, yes thousand, of them in the next few years replacing some with other types or descease resistant ones from the USA where the fungus came from during the second world war(wooden shell boxes...

    Hi from south of france

Hi, I am living at the base of the montagne noire in the south of france after 25 years of central London. I have had to make do with armchair bushcraft so far this year as I havent had any spare time. I will get out there before the end of the summer. I loved the "spoons" photos, I havent got...
