    Cattail fail.

The original poster said he was using a flint and steel while others are speaking of using a firesteel. These two items are vastly different form each other. I've never seen cattail fluff smolder or flame up using flint and steel...at least not before it's been charred. What is walshy using...

    Survival Videos

Hey all, here's a question for you. I'm looking for some new survival videos. Ones that have some education/learning value to them. I own every Ray Mears video, all the Survivorman ones, all the Woodsmaster ones, all the Prairie Wolf ones, Dual Survival and Man, Woman, Wild videos. What...

Bushcraft Magazine - Why So Expensive?

Sounds like a load of good info to me. But I still cant justify paying the "international" rate which is unfortunate. I'm looking at possibly getting a subscription to either Bushcraft magazine, Backwoodsman or maybe Self Reliance Illustrated... they're much more reasonably priced.

    watches in the woods?

I don't usually carry a watch with me when I go backpacking because it doesn't matter to me what time it is. I get up with the sun and the birds and I go to bed when I feel like it. However, learning to tell direction by using the sun and a watch is a handy skill so I will sometimes brings a...

    Flint Knapping

Man, that is some impressive work! I always wanted to do some knapping but we don't have any flint here. I'd have to order it in and it can get pretty expensive with shipping. Keep it up.

Bushcraft Magazine - Why So Expensive?

Totally!! To be honest, I was talking about "Bushcraft and Survival" not the magazine published here. In fact, I didn't even know Bushcraft UK was a magazine. I came here for the forums. There's a lot of good guys here with lots of great info so that was the draw for me. Now that I know...

Bushcraft Magazine - Why So Expensive?

Stick tangs and Full tangs. Advantages and Disadvantages

No offense to anyone meant. But here's my reasoning. First off, I really don't like the hidden rat tail tang. I think its weak and for a survival knife I would definitely choose a full tang, or at least a full length, broad tang over a stick or rat tail tang. I also don't like the general...

Bushcraft Magazine - Why So Expensive?

I'd love to order a subscription to the magazine but holy crap its a WHACK of dough! For a subscription to Canada it equates to $49 GBP...thats almost $80 Canadian for 6 magazines a year. Yikes!! Thats the same as over $13 per magazine...talk about pricing yourself out of the world market...

    My New Tinder Pouch

Thanks for the kind words guys. I made a smaller version and added some lacing around the border for decorative purposes. I like this version a lot better. I showed a few buddies of mine and they all want me to make them a tinder pouch now. They're all offering to pay me for my services so I...

do use ur cast iron dutch ovens at home

I always use cast iron at home. All my pans are CI and I use a CI Dutch oven all of the time. Great for making homemade soups and stews. I always go backpacking, never truck camping so CI is way too heavy to lug around in the bush. For backpacking I always use stainless steel billy cans.

    new knife

Damn, that is a nice knife dude! Good work...you definitely have skills.

Stick tangs and Full tangs. Advantages and Disadvantages

Oops. I was mistaken in my earlier post. As it turns out, not all F1 knives are full tang. My apologies. The F1 Micarta is a full tang, in that the tang has no decrease in size from the end of the blade to the back of the handle. The original F1 Pilot Survival knife does have a decrease in...

Stick tangs and Full tangs. Advantages and Disadvantages

Definition of full tang: A full tang means that the grip conforms to the shape and follows the outline of the tang, which is a solid piece of metal (typically steel). It is a single piece of metal from tip to base but the hilt is usually encased. Scales (flat pieces of handle material, like...

Feeling attachment to a particular place

There's a secret spot I go backpacking to all of the time and I absolutely love it there. When I arrive I can feel a euphoria come over me and I know I'm at home, in the place I need to be. The feeling is almost indescribable. One of the many great things about it is I honestly think I am the...

    firesteels overrated

Totally not overrated...if anything they're almost essential to any kit. There's likely a myriad of things that are hindering your progress with this highly useful item. Firstly, most firesteels come coated in some type of protective coating that often has to be removed first before a decent...

    My New Tinder Pouch

This is the first thing I've ever made using leather...so its not great but its not completely horrible either. Its a tinder pouch. Inside, I keep my tin that holds all my char cloth, a smaller round tin to make the char cloth, a striker and a piece of flint. Its dimensions are about 6" long...

    How do you number 2?

Find a tree that has fallen and is resting on its branches so it lies a foot or two above the ground. I dig a whole on the other side of the fallen tree so I can sit down as if I were on a bench. #2 falls into the hole I'm seated over, it and my toilet paper gets buried in the ground. Make...

    Steel Strikers

Btw, I am Grizzly2k1....I just changed my name to something a little catchier. Think I might just stick around this forum for a while. Some good guys here.

    Steel Strikers

Hey guys, thanks for all the suggestions. As it turns out, the ones from Woodlore end up being about $5 more than some of the other sites I've been looking at. So I just ordered up another one from Ray. I do like the ones Primal Connection sells and will probably get one from them as well...
