Frozen boots after sleeping outdoors during a cold night

Hello Lefteris, I would not recommend at all sleeping boots on, that really easily gets your feet freezed cause you need to be able to move your toes (tested). Also when moving and working during the day, keep changing your socks every few hours to dry ones (you can dry your wet socks under...

Toboggan or Pulk that is the question ????

Hi all Sub Zeros! I think one more point to think is skis vs. snowshoes. When using skis, carrying backpack does not feel so bad as with snowshoes. Also pulk seems to work better with skis than toboggan, because if travelling alone you make quite narrow path with skis and toboggan...

    2012 bcuk Advanced Arctic Expedition

Hi James, Not sure if you got your answers already, but hopefully I can give some tips atleast: 1. At (arctic) cold it takes quite a long time to cook anything with alcohol stoves. If picking up gas stove make sure that you get 4 season gas bottle. Best is petrol stove (unfortunately...

    Melting snow

Yep, taste is kinda 'smoked' if you just melt water from snow at fire ... but hey you can be that 1% who likes it? :D There is also other reason why salt, pine or spruce needles or birch branches were added by Saami people to snow while melting it on fire and it is related to dehydration...

    Out in winter

Fresh air while sleeping under your tarp won't hurt at all, if your sleeping bag's 'comfort' is near the expected temperature. Just check that you will be safe from rain and wind. Also grab few chemical handwarmers with you, I promise they will save your trip! :umbrella:
