Drill bits generally break when the workpiece moves. Make sure the block is securely held to the table of the drill press. Take your time with the drilling don't try and force the bit through. Make sure you are using a good quality bit and keep flushing the hole out as you go. You should be able...
Ash would be my preference for a good strong durable staff. Hazel gives a lighter weight staff but it does not have the same intrinsic strength. Personally I would never cut oak for a stick as it takes so long to reach an appropriate size. Both ash and hazel are woods that may be coppiced so...
Ive made a couple of rope machines for my scouts to use. Both have been reasonably successful but have require a bit of tweaking to get them running just right. I used birch faced ply on both occasions and have been pleased with how it performed. They were made a couple of years ago and have had...
Mea culpa. SL 5th Rotherham. Most people get presents for their 21st birthday I got a scout troop and have been running it ever since. I believe its the most important thing I have done with my life so far.
To get it to temperature to burn on wood it would need to be engraved on brass or something similar. Ive just come back from a Scout camp in derbyshire where they had had a special belt brand made. The firm that made it were M Shaw engraving ltd in sheffiled http://www.mshaw.co.uk.
I have no...
If you want something tested to distruction give it to some scouts ! My troop have been known to exterminate a whole range of kit in the past. Glad to see someone else using proper sharps with scouts though! I like the recon on the blade im sure your Scouts will find it easier to handle.
By no means a waste of good gin. Beech leaf gin has been one of my favorite tipples for a long time. Best consumed sat round a fire.:) I've found that its best if you leave it for a year, if you can wait that long. It looses a little of the bitterness that way.
I'm told you can do something...
It looks too thick and curved downwards to be jew's ear. The specimens I've seen are usually further above ground level and more often than not on elder. I'm sure someone on here will put us right.
My preferred maker (still in production) is Ashley Isles, Ive found the quality of their tools second to none currently produced. Also they are nice people to deal with.
Its worth looking on evilbay you can pick up some really nice high quality old tools for far less than new stuff. Although...

I joined cubs at eight and never left. Im now thirty one. Currently Im DSL and SL and see it as my mission in life to upset our cub leaders by having far to much fun with their cubs :lmao: .
I have to confess that my troop get a steady diet of bushcrafty things. But then they have...
Rather than trying to finish wood products with wire wool try using scotch-brite type pads. They dont leave behind any of that irritating gray dust.
You can get them from good old Axminster! http://www.axminster.co.uk/category-Abrasive-Hand-Pads-553859.htm
From past experience you are...
Unless you really know what you are doing with Tilly, Vapalux, Bialadin type pressure lanterns you wont get the best out of them. They are very temperamental beasts, but super fun.
Ok I admit it Im biased Ive got about 35 of them but that aside I dont think they can be beaten for a...
Ive got to agree with BorderReiver you dont realise how alcoholic homebrew is. At least you dont until you stand up, or try too!!
Ive been brewing and wine making since i was a venture scout and i shudder to think how many parties I cant remember becauseof the stuff. but ive loved every drop...
You might try Cramp Ball fungus.

This is my next making.
I though i would have a go at making a kuksca. This one is done in steamed pearwood and has stood up to some serious hammer, I let my scouts play with it for a weekend!
Spalted beech is nice stuff to work with and in comparison to some of the exotic hardwoods is really cheap. I hope you have as much fun playing with it as I did!
