theres a campsite at debden, in epping forest, where you can have fires, and i think its litterally fields that run into the forest, although i havent checked it out yet. could be a good possibility!!

i've heard of elder and budleia being used for making hand drills, but in my experience they both tend to have a hollow/pithy centre. obviously there must be a way round this. could somone let me know. is it a case of cutting the thicker stems , which tend not to be so pithy, and then whittling...

cheers for prompt replies i'll head off down the hardware shop...yes i have left some of the bark on when carving it, my only concern with the linseed oil is it wouldn't necessarily stop the edges of the bark where it's been carved from peeling off or damage. Any thoughts?

I've just finished carving a walking stick from hazel and wondered if anyone out there can give me ideas for a finish that isn't a modern day varnish..something more natural that seals and protects but would bring out the grain and detail well.. cheers
