I'd need a whole fleet of Persephones!

Not foraged, since I planted two in my backyard, but nevertheless... This is the "Wonderful" cultivar. I pruned the trees last year, just to open up the structure of the shrub and make it easier to retrieve the fruit from in among the thorns. I love pomegranates and will eat a few...

    Pain in the neck

For me, I find that the conventional wisdom of the heavy load near the middle of the pack (internal frame) or top of the pack (external) does not work for me. The heaviest item I carry (most dense) is a bear cannister full of food. It goes on the very bottom of my pack. Otherwise, I feel like...

    Drinking chocolate

I like Mexican-style hot chocolate mix. It is spicy and wonderful. A lot of it comes in tablets which require grinding, but some comes in a powder. It all requires milk, so I use powdered milk. You can jazz up regular hot chocolate with vanilla, cayenne pepper, nutmeg, and cinnamon if you want...

    Fig tree and figs

I am out in California, so much of what I say may not apply. I have a fig espaliered on a west facing wall (stucco in full sun) that went absolutely crazy this year. So many figs I could not keep up. It is a Brown Turkey fig. I have never tried drying them to preserve them since I think that...

who carrys a hip flask and whats your tipple (pics would be nice)

When I carry one it is this one which my father probably bought when he was in England ('42 - '43). Empty right now (and in need of polishing) but last occupant was Laphroaig, if my nose does not lie.

    The perfect mulled wine..........

Sat by a campfire last night and warmed myself up with a cup or two of this recipe. It was very very nice. The perfect amount of spice and not sticky sweet. Since my syrup came out a little thin, I used 1/2 syrup and 1/2 wine.

    The right pair(s) of socks?

I blister easily and it took me several tries to find a sock that helped. In my experience I blister more easily than nearly everyone I've met. Hopefully you won't have such problems! Out here in California, I worry more about heat than cold, so I have more experience keeping my feet cool...

    Having problems making Char cloth

The cloth did not catch fire, just the smoke. But I was sure I'd messed it up and the cloth was burning (this was my first batch) but once everything cooled off, I had useable cloth. It caught easily from my striker.

    Having problems making Char cloth

I used some lightweight linen scraps and small hinged tin box (had mints in it). The linen scraps were piled loosely in the box. I poked a hole in the tin with a push-pin, then tossed it on a charcoal fire in the barbecue. The tin's lid did not fit very tightly (I guess) since lots of smoke...

    Hello from California

If you want to just hike during the day I suggest Hidden Falls Regional Park in Placer county. Nice variety of trails and some nice waterfalls and rapids to see. Day use only. There are a few campgrounds in the Auburn State Recreation area. You'll need to call for conditions and if they...

    The perfect mulled wine..........

Made a huge batch of this today. I don't know that I boiled it down enough but it promises to be tasty!

    Hello from California

Wow! All the informative threads! So many ideas! I grew up in Michigan's lower peninsula and in Ontario, Canada - spending lots of time outdoors. Camped and hiked throughout my youth and young adulthood with my dad and with a seriously cool Girl Scout troop (we camped in the snow! we...

    What To Do With Ducks?

This should be good with duck. Won't help with cooking the bird, but will be nice along side. Port reduction Makes about 1 cup (US cup) (240ml) 1 1/2 cups port 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar 1/2 cup dried tart cherries minced shallot (a large one - 3 US tablespoons worth) 2 sprigs fresh...
