    Life/Perspective changing books or inputs

I have read so many over the years but I do recall Jonathan Livingstone Seagull feeling quite profound at the time.

    British Army ECW Mittens, Inner(?)

The goretex mittens are German or Austrian I think. Unlined so they will go over the wool fleece mittens. I sewed the fleece backing on to clean goggles with and the braid was just decorative. The braided leather strap is a leash but it has glaciated ends to stop it hanging too low and catching...

    Still got my Broni too.

So called “breathable” fabrics tend to clog up with ice in very cold conditions. Having two layers might mean that the inner layer remains warm enough to function while the outer layer takes the ice build up. That is certainly how my sleeping system usually works in Arctic winter conditions.

    British Army ECW Mittens, Inner(?)

You can see one of the MOD inner mittens on the right of this picture. Wool fleece and very warm. In practice, I use the overmittens as a barrier layer over a pair of gloves like the Hestra pair you can see here.

    The "PhotoShop" Issue.

Likewise, the darkroom was a very enjoyably part of the process that I miss too. Still got a lot of the gear in the attic, can’t bring myself to get rid of it. For me, it was where my images came to life. I only really worked in mono and the results straight from a negative on a grade 2 or...

    The "PhotoShop" Issue.

It’s causing much scratching of heads in the competition and exhibition circuit I can tell you. Problem is that Photoshop and some other programs are automatically incorporating it’s technology and capabilities into many of their retouching tools because they are convenient for professionals...

    The "PhotoShop" Issue.

Just stumbled on this old thread. These days the conversation has moved onto Ai which is being used to “enhance” many images or even create totally “fake” images as well. At least it has deflated the “Is that Photoshopped” issue a bit…

Where do we get our leather?

As Toddy says, the re-enactors markets ( TORM and ARM ) are a good source where you can get your hands on and feel the quality for yourself. Usually held in early spring and late autumn near Coventry.

    Christmas Traditions

Apart from food and drink I think my only “tradition” is three afternoons chilling out in front of the tv with an extended Lord of the Rings marathon.

What do you want to have on Bushcraft UK?

That has happened to some of my threads unfortunately. I always hosted pictures on my own web sites but as the servers have been updated so have some of the URLs which breaks the links. I used to try and keep them all up to date but when the sites changed from HTTP to SHTTP it broke all the...

    My "stealth" lights.

Head lamps are a menace when camping with other people. Most people set them to shine where they look but it is natural to look at people’s face when you turn to talk to them, destroying any night vision they may have built up. I use a small torch, usually fastened to my chest and pointing...

    My "stealth" lights.

I mark a lot of my critical equipment with luminous tape. I use self adhesive vinyl from eBay that is made for sign makers which retains a good glow for hours. Available in rolled sheets so you can cut it to any shape.

    Modern, robust, candle lantern

Thanks to Brian, my collection has just expanded a little. Original Stonebridge on the left, French, Swiss and Repro Stonebridge on the right.

    Cold or just cold.

I’m still wearing sandals at the moment. Put some boots on for a day or two when there was snow on the ground but otherwise been fine. I cold camp on my Arctic trips because I find it easier to dress for the cold and not have to keep stripping off when I move into my shelter, which is usually...
