    Burner multitool

For travel a simple but adequate, cheap enough. Does it exist?

    Oaks and oaks ...

I have a mid size 70 years old oak that has grown in an open field (now next to my house) it seems to be killing almost everything underneath, even moss is not looking healthy. As far as I understand the cause is mostly tannins from various dropping parts, mostly leaves. Soils here tend to be...

    Fixing a hammock to rock

Has anyone experience to fixing one/both ends of a hammock to rock (cracks I assume ...). I have no experience in climbing so what kind of hardware is available and what works? I have noticed that finding two trees at proper distance is not always easy but at times a cliff face and a tree seem...

    Why a folding knife

Not intended to be a fight between folders and more solid ones. I started wondering why some one made a folding knife? Some fast googling and apparently the oldest found is about 2500 years old. So has anyone come across why. The early ones were clearly weaker than any fixed blade tanged...

    Towards slightly greener fleece

I did some reading: looks like microplastics from synthetic clothing is in large part because stapled yarn is used (fleece). In the past I have seen continuous fiber pile weave clothing that should give reasonable properties in comparison to present fleeces and lessen the micro plastic...

    A burner SAK

Recently had to travel with just cabin luggage, meaning no tools or blades of any kind (I know, theoretically some airlines and airports allow 60 mm non locking ones, but how to find that combination and phase of moon is beyond me). So is there a decent CHEAP replacement, just good enough, that...

    Danube delta

Had a chance of spending 3 days in Sfantu Gheorghe. A small village with no road access on the southernmost arm of the Danube. Not very distinctive in any way except the over 4000 sqkm of delta around it. At one time a fishing village that moved eastward every now and then when the delta...

    Cabin sized baggage

Has anyone found a decent backpack or like that is sized to fulfill the requirements for cabin. Did a recent trip where my "assault" pack definitely was too tactical looking (whatever) and very much wrong size and too heavy. Preferable not in fluorescent colours.

    "Burner knife"

Looks like I am going to spend some days in the Danube delta in June. Travel involves plane changes so we have decided to travel with cabin only luggage. That kind of means no knives but I want one when there so any suggestions for a reasonable cheap knife for the duration? I don't have the...

LEP flashlight - practical for anything?

    Roxon system?

Has anybody experience on this tailoring system for SAK type knife and apparently for a multitool? Met it on YT as random ad.

    Did a walk in Lapland

A few weeks ago did a walk in Lapland, the wooded part. Four days and about 60 km. Had #1 son checking my orienteering. It was probably my hardest 60 k as local reindeer had been very lazy and the upkeep of trails had not been done so we looked at the map and went that way. The amount of...

    What kind of needle

My knowledge of sewing is very limited. I apparently have to use a very thick thread (2-3 mm depending a bit on the way of measuring) for some carpet repairs. What kind of needle to use or if not needle then what? Thread looks and smells like hemp.

    Old knife restoration

I bought two old knives, definitely not working ones though both in good condition. I am going to do some basic cleaning but how much? Should I have the blades darkened after cleaning? A kukri and a jambiya.

    "Best" outdoor lighter

In the past I have used the ubiquitous BIC but does something (much) better exist?

What to use as tinder in different parts of Europe

Here in Finland my first and second choices would be birch bark, third could be debated. But what is the standard in others parts? I actually have no idea as I have never had to light a fire anywhere else.

    Dawn redwood (Metasequoia)

Has anyone experience trying to grow this fossil? Got some seeds and very simple instructions and now looking for a bit more info.

    Gliding snowshoes

OK, tried them for the first time ever. Basically short wide skis (140 cm, 12cm) with non slip fur on part of the glide surface. Well they work, kind of, they do not glide nearly as well as skis but almost as handy as snow shoes in tight places, poles really required. In even half way open...

    Travel cloak

Read a few rather old stories slightly south of here (almost anything is), they often refer to "travel cloaks", apparently mid weight woolen large cloaks? Has anyone any experience or ideas if they actually were useful or just what existed at the time?

First snow and another strange Finn

So we had officially the first snow of this fall all 2cm of it. Also on one of the afternoon tabloids had a story about a Finn who after a divorce decided to live out in the woods. Or as it turned out, sleep in the woods, nine months from May 2 2019 he slept out in a hammock (not specified)...
