Where can I get a long digging hoe?

I have hard clay soil with stones. This is a big improvement on the previous garden, which was clay with 2 foot rocks, but still quite hard to plant in. I'm looking for a tool like a long mattock. I have, and like, an old azada, aproximately 1.4 meters long, head is about 6 inchs wide by maybe...

British Blades Forum Knife - The Coolest Knife That Never Was?

Whilst I have been impressed with the level of technical knowledge displayed on the thread (especially in relation to the sea of ignorance we see outside the forum on a daily basis), the critical question is how much would it cost, and how many people want one?. I have my British blades...

    Smoke control zones

Thank you, everyone. I really appreciate the advice. No amount of reading regulations carries the weight of your collective experience.

    Smoke control zones

I am moving to a smoke control zone. The new house has an open fire in the living room (and gas central heating). Following on from the thread about preparing for winter, and the discussion on fuels, i was hoping to tap into the forum's collective knowledge. The house is in the high peak, and...

    Brewing coffee?

I find it hard to make bad coffee with an aeropress. It seems remarkably tolerant of all the variables. Now, I'm sure lots of you could make better coffee with more care, effort and measurement, but more or less whatever I do, the aeropress makes decent coffee. I'm using one thats about 12 years...

    Cabin sized baggage

Tom Bihn - expensive but good quality. I love my tristar. That's the one I use all the time. I got the bigger aeronaut as a present, but i dont really like the end pouches. My wife nicked my Western flyer, (she travels a lot) slightly smaller but still good. None really showing wear in more than...

    What’s your top scone recipe?

Top tip. Dont roll it out. Shape lightly by hand, and bake soon after adding liquid as the raising agent is initiated by water. Result- ugly scones with beautiful texture.

    What colour emergency strobe light?

Why not use the glotoob, then you can have red, green or blue, flashing or on permanently? I use one for the dog's night time walks and they are tough, waterproof, and have respectable battery life.

    Alternatives to DMT Diafold sharpener

Fallkniven dc3 or4 might suit? Spyderco double stuff? Spyderco sharpmaker rod? I use the diamond rod and medium rod quite often on garden tools. Years ago I got a file that uses strip abrasive from Axminster, and it's very good.

Percolator thoughts? Good, bad, other? Which one to get?

It's very hard to make bad coffee with an aeropress. Remarkably tolerant of everything. Otherwise, bialetti for strong Italian, esprit for best cafetiere.

    Von Tempsky Bowie

I've got one. Very heavy. Very solid. Handle not a good shape. Still a nice thing though. How about a junglas? Much lighter, better handle, still solid. Although not a Bowie, I rate the skrama 240. Money no object? busse, swamp rat might be your friends.

    Wood splitting wedge edges

No one going to mention a froe? The tool, not the haircut of a toolDefinitely the tool for controlled splits. I think the long handle to lever helps. I also have an 18 inch mini sledge (from Wickes) that is a really useful tool.

Experiences with Cold Steel SRK 3V?

Worth thinking about the varustelaka jakaripukko140 for about£50 or the fallkniven A1 if you want to spend your money? I really wanted an srk when they were cheap, but that seems a lot of money now.

    M.O.D Survival Knife mods?

My old one was pretty easy to grind. I dropped the angles on both side, extended the grind up the blade, dropped the back edge near the point a little, reworked the handle a little. Of course, I didn't have much choice, it had spent a few years in a plastic box which had filled with rain water...
