Anyone else thought of / tried to to re-grind afew inches at near the choil so it's abit more useful, As I'm thinking of trying it.

My old one was pretty easy to grind. I dropped the angles on both side, extended the grind up the blade, dropped the back edge near the point a little, reworked the handle a little.
Of course, I didn't have much choice, it had spent a few years in a plastic box which had filled with rain water. Bit time consuming, but not tricky, steel used is pretty forgiving.
