    Home made Kuksa

Thank you. After thinning it down some, I tempted Fate by speed-seasoning it in hobo-heated wax and oil, and the cracks aren't even full-thickness. It may even hold water (albeit with a lightly odd taste, given the age of the oil).

    Awl for Leatherman

Resurrecting this thread in case anyone has any news. I never got around to modifying my kit. Guess I'm not awling enough.

    Inflatable Canoes

They may not stop a bullet, but some of the commercial ones are trustworthy enough; judging by this lady's experience. http://www.innovakayak.com/news.htm

    Home made Kuksa

I got fed up the other day of waiting to stumble across a birch burl, and used some trimmed sea buckthorn to give a crook knife a workout. I've taken some photos mid-finishing, before it splits (the sheen is wax that may delay the inevitable). The 'ear' handle (lug?) turned out to be a nice...

    How round a butt ?

Thanks - you've given me proper objective reasons, beyond "just because", for preferring a bird's head when I grip my butt. Sic. 1. Hand shape 2. Security (not that I'm swinging it like a bill-book all that often) 3. Rounded end, should it be required Sincerest thanks, Finbar Saunders

    the forager handbook

I asked RM last year, who said there were some delays, but that it was still on track. To rephrase that, "no idea when it's supposed to be coming out, though".

    How round a butt ?

For reasons I can't justify objectively, I'm drawn to the hook shape (there's probably a proper knifey term for it - or is a screwdriver butt something I'd rather deny ?). Logic would appear to favour a butt line at right angles to the main axis; but given the huge variation in choices, there...

    How round a butt ?

In some parts of the forum, the fact that you have plural knives would make you an expert. The fact that you've given a considered answer does it for me - thanks.

    How round a butt ?

Following on from my open question about how far to drop the point of a 'bushcraft' knife, and with a doff of the cap to the 'knife handle encyclopedia', I would like to canvas the opinion of the experts of the shape of their butts. Why is it angled / rounded / square / coffin-shaped ...

    Technical t shirts

If you: - Are out for more than a couple of days - Don't have room for too many changes of clothes - Have a degree of concern for any travelling companions - Can afford it ... merino's a good alternative. I have an old and patched technical (plastic) one that I bought a long time ago for...

a spoon and kuksa carving course

...into your tinder bin. I've still to get through my accumulation of not-spoon, not-staff, not-sword, etc.; so tinder is seldom a problem for when there's no-one to see me light a bonfire with wood shavings instead of feather sticks.

Hobo Stove Gallery (Probably picture heavy)

Once more, with pictures ? (having trouble using wife's Mac) http://www.bushcraftuk.com/gallery/data/500/medium/Hoboevo1.jpg http://www.bushcraftuk.com/gallery/data/500/medium/Hoboevo2.jpg http://www.bushcraftuk.com/gallery/data/500/medium/Hoboevo3.jpg...

Hobo Stove Gallery (Probably picture heavy)

Finally finished flogging my dead horse. I couldn't find (read "didn't seek very hard") the wood gas stove; so the boy and I came up with the fourth image as our best bet.

When is a Hobo not a Hobo?

I finally got around to making a stainless version of my hobo shield. If the base material was a skip-scavenged water heater, but I used a HSS-CO drill bit, does that make it some kind of Supertramp stove ? A hobo hybrid ? Frustratingly, after a day's sawing, straightening, drilling...

    Aberdeenshire Meet

Absolutely perfect for bivvying; but the kids aren't at that stage yet. Sheltered in the woods below Little Oxen Craig last weekend; couldn't handle another night of flapping. The idea has always been to catch a midsummer sunrise, but bed has always been too comfortable.

Hobo Stove Gallery (Probably picture heavy)

Still championing the bottomless hobo shield - here in its final set-up, protecting a remote-canister gas stove. Sketches for the stainless version are progressing, albeit very slowly. (Actually, more an excuse for a gratuitous shot of breakfast on Little Oxen Craig. Ever wondered who buys...

    How drop a point ?

(agree with the statement, just wouldn't claim skills for myself)

    How drop a point ?

Copy that: I'll admit to using a smaller blade more often than my AW or billhook, but would hesitate to claim skills as the reason. Just curious about the 'bushcraft' (Woodlore, etc.) shape, and the reasons for it.

Higher tip ? Deeper curve ? More depth ? None of the alongside ?

    How drop a point ?

Thanks for the welcome. It's been enjoyable so far, trying to avoid being caught out. Ray Mears helped to design a survival knife for Wilkinson Sword; somewhere on the evolutionary tree between the standard-issue MOD and the type of thing sported by Rambo. It was plagued somewhat by...
