Ah the joys of ebay and couriers! At least it turned up in the end :D Glad the growl helped too
I found the oven better for the flattening and general shaping too. The industrial hair dryer is good for belt loops and fine tuning the fit and shaping, espesically if you have a fine nozzle for it.
Nicely done sir :)
I found the oven worked much better for me when it came to the the initial flattening at least. What did you do on the back for belt loops?
Model engineering sites/shops are a good source of brass rivets like that. The sort that make model engines, not painted figures and beads. Or buy brass wire and make your own
Small burns are more difficult to control than larger ones, things don't scale down that well. That said, a 200l oil drum isn't too hard and will give about a wheel barrow full of charcoal. An oil drum only takes a day to stack, burn and cool; so easy to experiment with
If you go that route...
yeah. I still want one :D
I use an Arbortech turbo plane to carve spades from 2" thick oak boards. It's the same type of thing but 110mm across and fits an angle grinder. It's amazing how much material you can carve of with very little pressure!
that was a lovely little video :)
I need to shuffle my forge and power hammer around so I can sit down. The drill/morticer is a nice looking bit of kit (I like the huge counterweight to lift the quill instead of a spring).
Like Stew, I loved the handle shaping disc. Looking at the shavings...
It looks like DHL are OK, both domestic and international delivery.
They don't specifically mention knives or bladed items (though antiques and works of art are). They 'might' class them under the 'dangerous goods' heading, but I can't find any clarification as to what they consider dangerous...
for goodness sake!!! :censored:
when did royal fail institute these new regs? I have sent goodness knows how many 'bladed articles' abroad with them! Several over the last few months too. So far I've not heard of any having been stopped or opened, so they clearly don't x-ray everything for...
I get lots of tools from ffx and they are great, if a little patchy with what is in stock (ie if you need part of an order the same week, then phone to check or they will wait a month until everything arrives with them!).
They are also the cheapest place i've found for certain SAKs.
I agree, they normally replace the whole thing unless requested (such as engraved sides etc).
Replacement parts, especially waves, are available on etsy (uk sources). Lots of folk modify tools, so most common parts are there as well as upgrades on blades
If you are on facebook, try the axe junkies group or better still the billhook junkies group. There are lots of folks on there that are i to their 19th century tool makers and might have an idea.
Never carried a wallet, like Wander, it's "all of my eggs in one basket". I wouldn't ever put credit cards in my phone case for the same reason.
I also don't like bulky/heavy/rigid things in my pockets either. When i get to the workshop, the first thing i do is take my phone out of my pocket...
crikey, you had me worried there for a minute! The dates in the list are the same as on my website and in my diary, which is a small surprise to me as well :)
I was late putting this year's course dates onto my website so I still have some places left on the group courses this summer. I don't schedule many group courses these days but if you have your own group (4-6 people) then we can run one just for you :) I also run private courses for pairs and...
Sorry to hear this mate :sadwave:
Most of my materials and consumables are made in Europe and I sell stuff all over the world (despite the extra costs and delays to the customers), so I fully understand the trouble you've been having since good ole brexit
Hopefully you'll be able to...
Congratulations!
I suggest hooking up with Hamish (half goat), he often does work there so should be easy to get hold of. He's a wealth of knowledge and can teach you stuff as well as pointing you in the right direction
