    Sharpening query with a twist?

I don't quite undrstand the problem here Ogri. (Maybe I'm not alone and this is why I'm the first to reply) If you're making the blades from scratch, you need to grind in the bevels prior to bending the thing into the required curve, THEN heat treat. Sharpening should then be a relatively...

    Old Town Canoe F/S

CANOE, AND ALL SUNDRY ITEMS SOLD SWMBO and I don't ever seem to get the time to use this these days we are looking to sell our canoe. It's an Old Town Discovery 169. The bow and stern have been strengthened to prevent damage to the main hull. This was done purely as a preventative measure...

    Christmas/New Years Meet at Swyns 5 & 6 Jan 2008

I'm hoping that I can make it down for the day on the Sunday if that's OK ? 'Hoping' coz I've got to see how much kitchen I've got ripped out and re-built the previous day before I'll know whether I can make it. The sacrifices we have to make just to get something as insignificant as an Aga...

    Great balls of fire !

I recently bought some cheap ping-pong balls to cut in half (it's a long story but those of you who frequent the BB forum will understand ;) ) I had them delivered to the office and just had to try turning them into halves before my night shift was over :o Outside the office we have a spot on...

    "Bruiser Knife"

Are you sure you're feeling OK Red ? First you "come over all 'Wayland' on us" and now your considering getting a convexed knife ? :lmao: I'd recommend the Fallkniven A2 as I have one and love the thing. It's a little bigger than you are talking about, but I've not had it 'baulk' at a job...

    parang materials

1/4" stuff ? Oh to be so lucky as to find some 1/4" ! The only time I had a go at forging a piece of a leaf spring I think it must have been more like 7/16" thick. Boy does that take some hammering to thin down !

    Wæshael

Nice ! Fill it and drain it well Red. Enjoy your 'sup' and be well. :beerchug: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I wonder if this little phrase will find it's way into Bushcraft Lore ? It ought to, it's so..... well.... right...

any one ever used this stuff?

Flitz is a brand name for a type of metal polish. Very similar to Autosol Chrome Polish. looks a bit like toothpatse and comes in a toothpaste type tube too. You can get it from places like car spares shops, Halfords and even the Motoring Aisle in some of the larger Tescos and the like.

Anyone use a Magnesium Fire Starter

Do you mean the type with the little ferro rod set into the side of a block of magnesium that you make scrapings of magnesium to light with the ferro rod, or a good old decent sized, stand-alone, ferro rod ? I've used both, but tend to prefer the ferro rod for normal firelighting as I...

first fire steel ignition unexpected result

As far as I know, "ferro" rods are basically a giant version of the sort of so called "flint" you get in a cigarette lighter. They are made of an alloy of many metals called "ferrocium" which is known to produce large, long lasting sparks. The fact that the alloy contains some magnesium helps...

    New leather for Odin

Nice work Mike, and no need at all to apoligise for the "freehand" artwork. One thought that crosses my mind though. Why not have a bash at getting some leather dye onto the original sheath and see if you can't get that down to a reasonable hue ? I've been surprised to find that a good dose of...

    Funny tee shirts

SWMBO always regrets not buying a tee shirt with this on it when we saw it... "Slowly, surely, One by one, The penguins stole my sanity !" and I want the one I saw that said... "My idea of proper Gun Control is hitting what I aim at !" A mate has a good one which reads.. "This...

    Diamond hones

"Buyer beware" is the best advice I feel I can give regarding "El Cheapo" brand diamond hones. I've tried them in the past and found that they wear out after about half a knifes-worth of sharpening. Getting a little more technical, cheap diamond hones are made with poly-crystaline industrial...

    Sharpening a RAT 7

I'll second Weavers words. I have DMT bench-hones but they live in the workshop for plane blades and the like. If I can't sharpen something with my Diafolds, it's in a very poor state indeed. I've sharpened everything from the small blades on Swiss Army Knives to billhooks and machetes with my...

    Dia-Sharp mini hones..

Hi Greg, As you might see in this thread http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20985&highlight=sharpening+workshop.. I use, and swear by DMT hones for all my sharpening. I'm afraid that I have now sold all the hones I had so cannot help you personally, but suffice to say that...

    Help Please

Dwardo, What size pop studs do you need fella ? I can let you have 2 or 3 of them and I'll post instructions as to the best way to fit them if you don't have the proper setting tool for them too. I have them with heads that are.. 15mm diameter, (not very many of those at the moment but could...

    Birch Bark 'Cigar' Tutorial

That's a neat idea. I like the fact that these could be prepared in advance and kept in a pack in suitable container until needed. You call it a "cigar", and as I enjoy a good cigar myself I can see that a cigar tube (from an individual Havanna) would make the ideal container for one (or two...

    Gummed up Kelly Kettle

If you're desperate to keep your kettle chimney spotless try removing the sooty tar with something like White Spirit or Turps. To be honest, my battered old Kelly Kettle has a build up in it that is probably 3 times as thick as the aluminium that it's on. To stop sooty dust falling out of the...

    Sharpening a RAT 7

Hi guys, As those who know me are already aware, I swear by diamond hones for sharpening just about anything. Whether it's a blade that simply needs a little more attention than a few wipes on the strop, or a full re-profile job. Obviously, you need a range of grit sizes to be able to cover all...

    Wasps!

Any of the dedicated wasp nest destoyer powders or foams should do the trick, but don't be tempted to use the stuff during daylight. The wasps are active during the day and an approach to the nest then is likely to result in annoyance on their part, and pain on your part(s). Treat the job more...
