Martti,
just a thought...what kind of info do you have on the type of food folks were eating to stay alive-military and loggers, at those temperatures?
A diet high in pemmican?
MikeLA,
the Arctic windproof and the SAS windproof.....the light cotton ones not the poly green lightweights.
bikething,
:o the trousers are supposed to resist the wind from, ahem, outside the fabric.
Wind inside is your responsibility.
There used to be a windproof dpm trouser which was very light material and quick drying...not your regular combats!
Are these still floating around or have they been replaced by something else? I have not seen these trousers for some time and am curious as to whether they are extinct.
Martti,
did you ever use the string vest in Finland and what are your experiences with it?
I believe the Finns have a different version to the Norwegian string vest.
Martti,
ages ago I had a pair of polyurethane wellingtons....they cracked and split after a while. I always thought a rubber wellie would have a longer life.
Maybe today the polyurethane has improved...as I recall it was around the ankles they split..maybe due to flexing.
Thanks for the replies everyone.
Rabbitsmacker,
thanks for that reminder.
I was interested to know if anyone did know if Wissart still made the boots in France as of today or if anyone knew if there was a comparable product still made in Europe that would not fall apart after 6 months. You...
Alright,
I read the threads on the canvas boots and am a bit confused.
Which brand of boot is still made in France or Europe?
The Palladium?
Wissart?
Or some other brand?
Does the Israeli canvas boot still exist and has anyone tried it?
Usually when I have purchased any footwear...
adriatikfan,
thanks for the link and translation.
I imagine one of these sweaters would last a long time so I figure you get your money's worth.
Has anyone ever seen these on the UK marketplace or tried them out? I know the pullover version turns up on surplus markets but this...
Alright, I was looking at that nice heavy Austrian sweater but came across something similar:
Alpinweste (Alpin pullover) and it appears to be a Austrian surplus sweater made out of wool and the sweater has a full length zipper!!! The search results come up on Google in the German language...
What footwear do you recommend for the following conditions?
Wet, rainy, mucky conditions.
Snow with perhaps wet slushy snow.
Has anyone tried out overboots-a boot that goes over your boot or just use the plain old Wellington?
big_swede,
thanks for posting-got me interested and I started reading about this -58 film!
johnnytheboy,
have you considered one of those Dutch 80% wool HH fleeces from Endicott's? Use a thin base layer and the fleece as a middle thicker wool underwear? It has a full zip so you can cool...
If you have to go the nonwool headover road,
check bicycle messengers/motorcycle supply stores for cold weather riding gear. Usually they will carry a headover type garment in synthetic material.
Itchiness problem:
Use Woolite for wool or similar product and hand wash-gently stretch back into shape and dry flat-avoids straining the wool. If you need to use a hanger use two hangers and wrap the headover around the hanger-takes longer to dry but avoids stretching out the wool. I have...
Handy item to have. Cuts off those cold drafts around the neck that occur even when you have a hood up.
I wear mine around the neck and also in different modes.
By itself.
As a open face balaclava with my jacket hood up over it. Think cold, wet, chilly weather.
With a cheap watch cap...
Wash your hands in lukewarm water and soap....regular soap. I have known folks who have been fans of HOT water and fancy bacterial soaps and I remember they were always prone to blisters on their hands.
Building up the repetition of labour with the hands gradually gets them used to it...but...
Another idea that was suggested to me or I read somewhere(can't remember exactly) was for example when looking at an object such as a tree was to look at the spaces around the tree rather than the tree itself. A tree with leafy branches try to look at the spaces around the leaves/branches...
Thanks again everyone.
HillBill, yes, that's it the way you describe this type of vision.
Southerncross,
thanks for the cataloging recommendation. Will try this out. I had noticed that I was not being observant enough then when I rewalked an area I would note things that I had not...
