Since posting this thread, a few independent manufacturers have started to make camera battery chargers that work off a USB socket. I sourced a couple of the more compact examples on eBay and these now give me the opportunity to recharge the camera cells in the field. I will let you know...

Tend to just use a roll of cloth plaster and cut the size I need. Not "sterile" because it's not in a sealed package but much easier to use and I'm not dead yet.
