    Wayland's Snow Shed

Thinking about it, I guess my preference for an open shelter comes from being an occasional visitor to that kind of environment. I want to experience the conditions as much as possible. If I lived there all the time then comfort would probably be a much higher priority than seeing something...

    Wayland's Snow Shed

That is what appealed to me about the tent Dave and Julie were using. It’s basic design was that of a kota / laavu when closed up but the addition of a panel that could be raised on one side gave the outward looking effect of something like a loue. For the way I camp that seems like the best of...

    Trip report for Kittila 2023

I wonder when I might have to stop this kind of thing. Each trip takes a bit longer to recover from and this one has been longest. I also wonder at the changes I am seeing in the Arctic. There seems to be wider temperature swings than you might expect, open water where you would expect ice...

    Trip report for Kittila 2023

It was made by a company called Snowsled and was supposed to be a lot heavier duty but because the runners were blown and hollow they wore through very quickly. I wasn't impressed. The Toboggans, being flat, spread any wear much more evenly which for the mixed surfaces we move on is useful...

    Trip report for Kittila 2023

I have to admit, the hybrid SkiShoes have piqued my interest. I used a pulk on my first trip but it did not do well on the roads where the toboggans seem to fare much better. https://www.ice-raven.co.uk/html/2012-expedition----arctic-norway---part-one.html

    Trip report for Kittila 2023

Interesting that the European tradition is skis while the Americas used snowshoes. There is also the regional differences between reindeer and dog sledding. I have never learned to ski and am rather suspicious of them. Far too many images in my head of people returning from skiing holidays...

They do but I have turned that feature off because my dietary requirements are very specific. I would rather know something is missing and replace it myself, than find out they had replaced it with something that contained onion ( Which could end my trip. ) That is one of the reasons being...

It is, isn't it? Right up to the point of getting an order confirmation I was expecting it to wimp out at some point but the only thing it wouldn't do is let me apply for a loyalty card. ( Which might have been useful to keep an order history if we go again next year.)

Planning a Winter trip to Finland.

What an age we live in? I have just ordered all my food and fuel supplies for the trip for collection from a local supermarket 1300 miles away at midday on the day of our arrival. I'm able to do this on a Finnish website, even though the only word I know means "thank you", because Google...

Planning a Winter trip to Finland.

Biggest challenge for me as a photographer is to keep the cameras running at sub zero temperatures. I've developed a few tricks over the years and I'll be trying a few new ones on this trip. You can see some of my solutions here: https://www.ice-raven.co.uk/html/challenges.html
