    Greetings from Northern Staffordshire !

Hi there, I hope you are not a "bushcrafter" because nobody here has any idea what that means :)

    So.. what happened...

I go so far but not beyond, it is impossible even not advisable to keep up with it all. I have been on Facebook since I did my postgrad degree and it was a student thing then, I do YouTube because I am a TV licence refusenik and I did do Twitter until it became Elon Musk's personal *ank fest...

    Wool anoranks?

Last line doesn't rhyme I'd fix it if I had the time.

    Wool anoranks?

My mum used to have a knitted woollen duffel coat like that, I think she got it at a jumble sale. I can remember many years ago taking her out to a midnight ramble in local woodland and that was what she wore to keep the cold out. She also used to wear a Welsh woolen cape in her later years when...

    Wool anoranks?

I was thinking, what did the Vikings wear? I went to a re-enactors market recently and there are a lot of people making historically accurate clothing nowadays including woolen tunics. No they don't have pockets, but that is authenticity for you.

    Tree Warden

Yes to say they have a blind spot would be an understatement. Sadly what is lacking in our Council leadership is joined up thinking. They are too much about dog whistle politics, but they have blown the wrong whistle here. They passed a policy to plant a tree for every citizen, but Covid came...

    Tree Warden

I did eventually hear back more than a year ago now so I think it is pretty much moribund in this area. Our Council are currently playing the bad guys by designating a street full of trees for the chop, so they can build a bicycle lane, you can imagine they are not popular at the moment.

    Woodland Custodianship

Sources tell me that a free school is interesting in buying the property I have also got an alert set up with the Land registry to inform me of any ownership changes in the area. FWIW it has been used as a location by BBC for a TV series set in a Midlands school.

    Woodland Custodianship

It's probably a while ago now, but the Council did undertake an audit of land available for housing and I went through the document to make sure the site wasn't identified. Although it is no longer greenbelt it is designated as greenspace, along with the allotment and neighbouring farm. The...

    So.. what happened...

And then of course there is the "camel toe" brigade with their hacks and skimpy outfits, not that I would be caught watching.

Recommendations for decent pair of walking shoes or boots on a budget.

Maybe it is just the luck of the draw but do not neglect charity shops, I have a pair of Mk1 Brasher GTX (the original and the best) and a pair of Timberland boots from charity shops, neither have worn out or needed resoling yet. With charity shops you just have to visit frequently and keep...

    Anorak or smock recommendations

I have the Keela smock that is reviewed here, https://bushcraftuk.com/community/threads/keela-ventile-heritage-smock-long-term-review.159965/ as you can see from the thread I got it in 2022 and the only issue I have had with it is fraying at the cuffs, which has been sorted with suede...

Perennial ornamentals for the boggy land

Himalayan Balsam and Rosebay Willow herb is a plague on any waste land including boggy land.

Perennial ornamentals for the boggy land

No go for a swamp cypress, I find on the whole that conifers don't like to get their feet wet, but taxodium distichum is something else, if you can find one.

    What did you buy today?

Today I was persuaded buy a guy called Alex from Hammer and Hound forge, at the re-enactors market in Coventry to buy a rather unusual bushcraft knife. What makes it different is a canted handle. Whatever, there are some things you can put in your hand and it just feels right.

uses for a very holy blanket

Cut it into small pieces for quilting, or unpick it and use it to stuff cushions.

Government Consultation - Banning Ninja Swords

Which of course shows the ridiculousness of trying to ban "weapons" by type, rather than regulating their sale and use. I saw recently that German knife manufacturers got round the ban on combat style knives by modifying the handles and rebranding them as kitchen knives. The problem is partly...

How to cook on a wood stove

Indeed my grans 1930s council house had a range back in the day but coal burning not wood.

    Water purification woes...

Probably down to good genetics and survival of the fittest in the end. I have certainly been exposed to soil bacteria all my life, I not infrequently get small cuts when I am out and about and they don't get infected. I am also one of these people yet to get Covid inspite of the fact that I come...

Government Consultation - Banning Ninja Swords

Nope if you read it Seaxes are excluded as are other types of swords used for fencing and re-enactment.
