You can also buy a thing that looks like a credit card with a V shaped notch cut out of the edge. You slide the tick into the notch and it slides right off, very convenient. Ive also used tweezers too but prefer the card thing as it seems to work more reliably first time.

One thing I always carried was a piece of wood to put under the center stand or side stand, after digging them into soft ground a few times and/or the bike keeling over you soon learn! I'm sure there are specially made attachments for this but the bit of wood I carried always did the job fine.

I'm in the persevere with your hammock camp, I find them very comfortable if you can find somewhere to hang it, and if you can't, just use your tarp and sleep on the ground.
