    Where are the butterflies?

I think the butterflies must have got their second wind. There's been loads over the last couple of weeks. Went for a lovely walk on Sunday - loads of big red admirals, coppers, commas, peacocks, and plenty others. Sitting in the back garden earlier and saw a mahoosive large white. It was a...

    Wildlife pictures

A bit of a first for me, this one. Although I've seen a great many common lizards, and know how they can vary in colouration, this is the first time I've seen one with blue on it - that patch just behind the 'ears'. There also appears to be a bluish tint to the flanks and rear legs. I've never...

    Unknown Beastie

Ah, great stuff - thanks, chaps. How odd, it never occurred to me that ladybirds would have larvae. But obvious they would, I suppose. Strange how such simple things pass you by, and offer a much appreciated complexity to the world when you realise. Cheers

    Unknown Beastie

Oh, I should say (in case it helps), taken in south east UK. Top one was about 5mm or so long, maybe one or two more. Can't remember how big the second one was because it was taken a while ago, but judging by the wood fibres in the picture I'd say it was more or less the same.

    Unknown Beastie

Anyone know what this little chap is? And is it the same as this one? I thought it may be, but now I see the two together they are not identical, but very similar. If not, what's this one as well? Cheers all

    Where are the butterflies?

Yup, we're doing that at work with the patients in a couple of weeks.

    Where are the butterflies?

Butterfly numbers and variety are definitely down this year. I've seen all the usual ones I would expect (including, oddly, more green hairstreaks than would otherwise expect) but numbers are much lower (especially the blues, which I would expect to see plenty of on the chalk hills here). Meadow...

Is it right to cut low hanging branches on a local footpath?

That. And not only say nothing to the Council, but to no one else either. You know what people can be like.

    Canoe Advice

Thanks, all. One or two things to consider, but looks pretty much as I thought it was. OK, my questions now answered - feel free to pile on with the mansplaining for anyone else who may see this thread in the future!

    Canoe Advice

Right then. I've pretty much made up my mind to buy a canoe. But what I would appreciate advice on is some legal matters. Namely, is any kind of licence needed? Also, can you launch from anywhere you like (presuming you are allowed to use that particular stretch of river)? Is there a...

    Lanyard beads

Could do. For example, they might be used as pace beads. Or something else. Or they could just be adornments. Have you got a picture of one that's causing you to scratch your head? Might be able to give a better answer that way.

    Creepy Crawly ID Needed

Oh, great stuff! No, I've never seen one. Hence why I didn't recognise it. I'm really pleased with that. This does mean, of course, that I will now have to stake out that spot one night on the off chance I'll see one glowing. That's great news - thanks.

    Creepy Crawly ID Needed

Anyone have any idea what this little beastie is? I've never seen anything like it before so at a loss. Taken in South East UK if that helps.
