picked up my monocular at the post office today :-) : unfortunately it's raining so i've only been unboxing and having a quick look at some distant trees, tomorrow UNFORTUNATELY the weekend starts which means a proper testing has most likely to wait until weekend is over (yay! (==weekend means...
update: as their costa rican website wasn't working (and the email came back as "address not found" i contacted the service address of their main website - - i got a reply from the costa rican dealer that they currently have issues with the website and that he has a 8x36 in stock (unless i...
about a year ago the last bus didn't stop when visiting local relatives so i ended up walking the 50 or so km back to where i'm working... i had my shoulder bag (which i take everywhere as soon as i'm leaving the property -- contents have been posted on more than one occasion :-) ) and daypack...
thanks, good to know that! especially that they dont just make a promise but really have a good service (in regards to their warranty). and that they have a dealer within the country is an important factor to me considering that shipping it overseas in case of a problem would cost me an arm and...
in a recent thread in the firecraft section i mentioned my frustration with my current situation. what keeps me stuck in this place is some paperwork (as its easier to sort close to town and with internet access vs. living out in the countryside without those things in easy range). well, that...
i once used yarrow when dealing with an issue during a mountain solo trip in New Zealand (where it got introduced by european settlers), but unfortunately it doesn't exist here along the caribbean coast of Costa Rica...
around here (in Costa Rica) following a creek downstream can lead you into into narrow gorges which then often end in waterfalls, requiring one to climb up and around -- nothing i'd recommend in the evening or during/ after rain when everything is slippery... that said about two years ago an...
throwing spikes at a dead tree -- good way to pass the time when being imprisoned as security guard for other people (not much longer!); so far i'm only accurate at about 2m but hopeless beyond...
"building up" my hands for hand drill as well lately again...
being a big fan of the documentary about chicago's greatest citizen (who scored four touchdowns in one football game for Polk High in '66...) the risk of marriage can be avoided easily :p :p i'd also wonder how i got from central america to scotland (and freeze my rear end as it's too cold there...
it would definitely be not a bad choice in a rainforest or coastal environment (where leather doesn't last long no matter how much tlc you give it and where a dropped knive can easily disappear in leaf litter on the floor -- guess how i come to know that :P )
that's the one i was referring to -- it's on my list of potential candidates to replace my beloved robbed F1, but i've heard mixed things about condor's quality control in the past, no idea of that's still the case...
i've learned about a few of the local plants but there's definitely much more and i wish i had more opportunities than my current situation allows me-- shame how much old knowledge gets lost -(
i wish someone had taught us this many moons ago when i (not voluntarily) ended up dressed in camouflage and carrying an assault rifle as the somewhat rudimentary first aid course was -like all first aid courses i had to attend...-- heavily focused on CPR
i hope i won't have to use it but it's...
wonder if that's why "otzi" carried several pieces of the fungus strung on a thong with him...
unfortunately there no birches here in the central american rainforest and apart from daldinia concentrica (or a close relative) i'm not familiar with the local fungi :-(
thanks for the replies! :-)
so there's obviously some truth to this, but it seems also to depend on the type of moss used. i haven't found sphagnum moss here, yet and won't rob the web of a tropical spider for first aid as they might be a wee bit upset and a spider bite on top of a bullet wound...
it's raining here all afternoon and i'm stuck inside, so time to grab a book --Bernard Cornwell's "the bloody ground" (about the US civil war) to be exactly...
on page 324 (of my copy) is a mentioning of one character stuffing a mixture of spider's web and moss into entry and exit of a bullet...
