I was looking for a compass and saw some in a shop window.......I ended up buying one online because none of the ones in the shop pointed in the same direction  :lmao:
not a good way to sell compasses if you ask me
Hi John,
I think they are stainless steel, but what sort I can't tell you. The two smaller blades seemed to be softer than the big one but that could be just that there was more metal to remove from the big one.
I agree, coconuts rule :headbang:
You could try whittling a small slither of wood to plug the hole with and then trim and sand it off smooth. If its a tight enough fit it shouldn't need any glue and a good oiling should keep it water tight. I have never used this technique before so its just an idea.
Hope this helps
Andy
I wasn't sure if I should post this here or on the edged tools forum (because of the coconuts :D ) Please feel free to move it.
So here it is:
These knives used to have horrible, perished rubber handles and didnt take an edge very well despite being hollow ground. But now they are...
I always carry matches but hardly ever use them. They do have another more useful, unconventional use though......I was once trying to light a fire on a very wet and cold morning and all my kindling and tinder was wet, I didn't know what else to do than empty out a box of matches with the wet...
I have four of these and they are excellent. they are also good to use when you have a stiff joint that needs warming.
I think the metal tab creates just enough heat to trigger an exothermic chemical reaction. Heating it again when its crystallised returns the chemical to its liquid state. Or...
I have been busy this weekend sanding, filing and taking photos......and ended up with this :D
One customised sak with beech scales :)
Thanks for looking
Andy

Listening to the recordings of buzzards and golden eagles and together with what you have all said about shape and colour etc., its definitely a Buzzard.
Thank you all for your help

Andy
cheers leon-1, I might go out again next weekend and see if I can get a better photo. Its quite often around because I recognised its call from times that I've thought "I wonder what bird is making that noise?"
Actually I have just been listening to a golden eagles call and it...
firstly, welcome to bcuk treebeard72, secondly get a Mora because they are very good and cheap, thirdly I dont know of any books but here's a walking stick that a beetle/worm type thing carved for me (I just removed the bark and added a few bits)
Andy :D
Anybody know what sort of bird this is?
Sorry for the poor quality pic, it was taken through the trees and out of seven frames its the best one I got (that's enlarged in quite a bit)
here's the original taken with a 300mm lens. I hope it gives a bit more sense of scale (it was huge)...
