The Buffalo Field Blanket

Does anyone own one of these or ever used one?

I'm considering getting one but they're rather pricey so would like to know what other peoples experience of them have been like. The reviews on the Buffalo website sound positive.

When I spoke to Buffalo on the phone they told me that it's made from the same Pertex material as their jackets but with an even thicker pile lining for extra insulation. Apparently the only jacket that Buffalo make which uses the same thickness of pile lining as the Field Blanket is their Parka which was specifically designed for the scientists that live in the Arctic hub research station who sometimes need to spend long periods of time working outside.

I’ve got one. Usual Buffalo quality and a good size, can’t go wrong really. Worth the money I think as will last forever and if Buffalo stop making they’ll no doubt become sort after.

One thing that concerns me is what happens if the cat jumps on it? Will her claws puncture the Pertex material and cause it to look scruffy over time?

It costs much more than a roast chicken. Would you let your cat jump on a roast chicken? How would you prevent that? Apply the same reasoning to any other object.

Pertex of all sorts does get snagged on thorns etc and can make a hole so I'm sure the cat's claws would. I'd actually be more thinking about the pile getting torn up in a scratchy claw sharpening attempt!
As Keith says, it's an expensive blanket, so if that's a likely occurrence then go for a cheaper alternative.

Crikey yes! I hadn't considered that.

When it gets used inside the house it will be in a room that the cat doesn't generally go in. Although there is still some chance a door might occasionally be accidentally left open or a cat can sometimes sneak in unnoticed. You know what they're like. I think I'll take a chance and get one anyway and just be extra vigilant whenever it's in use.

One of the customer reviews on the Buffalo website says they keep theirs in the car for pets to use and another one which has photo of the blanket with a cat lying on it and a comment saying that it's their cats favorite spot.

Yes I imagine it would be perfect for that.

I would mostly be using mine indoors but it might also get used if ever I want to spend a night sleeping over in the tack room at the horses field. I wonder how well it would work inside my Snugpak Jungle Bag as a layer of insulation? The dimensions suggest it should fit perfectly if folded in half and used taco style.

They seem to have stopped making them now. It does sound like an interesting bit of kit though. Although for how I intend to use it the blanket makes more sense anyway.

I have a buffalo fleece bag and a pertex cover for it. Sandbender gave them to me twenty years ago.
They work well, they last well, and they're comfortable.
Worth it if you can find a set in decent condition.

I have a Buffalo blanket, bought as soon as they released it, took it camping over the summer, it wasn’t cold but I sat out in my chair late very snug under the blanket, it’s very warm and well made, I suffer from RA so I’m sometimes cold even if the weather’s not bad, it will be used this winter as an extra cover over my Buffalo superbag, I’ve got a whole new winter set up based on comfort, Tentipi 7 with an anevay frontier stove, sleeping on a 2m x 1m fishing bed ( easier to get up with my joints ) will report back on a cold weather review

Why would they use Pertex Quantum on a fleece blanket though? Isn't it designed specifically to allow down to fully loft?
I'd much rather have a hard wearing outer material for a blanket and leave the high tech ultra lightweight materials for the technical jackets.

I think they chose Pertex due to it's high breathability and fast drying properties which makes sense as this product was originally intended for use by mountain rescue teams. I think it was only later made available to buy after a lot of interest from the general public and requests to purchase one.

With a blanket for civilian use I would personally be willing to sacrifice a bit of the breathability and fast drying properties for a more hard wearing outer material too.

Problem with that, is that it is bulky. I managed to get an inner and outer on ebay a while ago, had to fix the zip on the outer though.
