The easiest way to test it is to remove the hood and mantle. Empty it of fuel. Then turn off the vapouriser. Next give it 60 or so pumps and drop it into a bucket of water. You will see any leaks from the bubbles that are released, hopefully there will not be any.
Base Camp are very good...
You can test it for leaks by turning off the valve, and pumping it up to pressure, about 70 strokes. Then put it into a bucket of water and looks for air bubbles.
Obviously do this without the mantle and glass fitted.
You will need paraffin, but will also need meths for the pre heating.

Most of this is just repeating what Steve has said.
I have several lamps, both Tilley and Vapalux. This is how they have been described to me. Tilley are the old 'Austin Rover' where Vapalux are more of your 'Rolls Royce'
Out of my collection the two I use the most are a Vapalux M320 and a...
I have an Ozpig which also has a small flue.
This does block up over time. It also depends on what wood I am burning. Well seasoned wood has never caused a problem. However, burning 'crap wood' like pallets and wood that is damp and it will soot up the flue.
Longest burn I have done has...
I got one of these for my 40th birthday. For a 'newbie' this was great as everything was in one box. Have used it many times on my Ozpig.

I removed the legs on my one so...
Thanks for all of your replies. May leave this 'on the back burner' for a while I think.
I am having a few friends round for New Years Eve and wanted something different to greet them in the garden as they arrived.
However, the idea of dripping tar etc, may not got down too well.

Having watched Merlin for the last weekend and seeing some of Flaming Torches.
Can anyone advise on how to make one.
It looks simple. Stick, some cloth, dipped in some fuel and then lit.
However, may not be that simple.

For my bushcraft leather hat I used KIWI Camp Dry Mink Oil. Waterproofs and conditions all outdoor leaters.
Worked a treat on my hat, softened and waterproofed a treat.

Had the same issue with my collection of 3 vapalux. Spoke to a friend who made this for me. The spare slot is for a M320 when I can get one at a decent price.
The top section pull out to enable the lamps to be put in and then replaced to keep them secure.
