hi, wow thanks for all the positive feedback, i must have my notifications turned off i didn't think i'd had replies. Yeah I've lost hours doing this its so engrossing. I'm hoping to get some leaf springs next time i get the opportunity to forge, first step is replacing my fixed blade, then a...

    First aid kit

mine uses what was sold to me as a 'trauma pouch' which contained a couple of basic dressings, including a sealed head wound dressing to break out when the real ****. I carry this everywhere, literally, and it has been useful too many times to count. its about to get restocked, its...

    first attempts with a forge

got to use a 'travel forge' this summer, here is what a few days produced.. this firesteel was an attempt using very inferior material, pretty much just iron i think, and despite trying to quench it in oil it is nowhere near hard enough to produce a spark, so, just shaping practice...

    Opinel troubles/project

be great to see the finished item. a belt sander for sure, and a new ring from opinels website perhaps. i love restoring these knives, the tips so often break but can be resurrected by an amateur like me, very satisfying indeed.

What is your favourite UK legal carry bushcraft knife?

Here is my 1951 A.B.L. Colasse Royal Navy Knife. a cheap as chips knife that was made in 1951 and was new till it was sold to me for 7.99 gbp. Nothing locks or is over 3 inch, so it is totally legal, and does me very well for cutting rope and tape, and small cutting tasks with wood, though I...

    Exclusive use of tools

Hi everyone, I'm pretty new on here and to the idea of talking 'bushcraft' online etc. I thought I might start what could be an interesting beneficial discussion. As the person out of my mates who loves making fires and camping outdoors etc the most (pretty much) so I'm always the one who has...

Choosing a sleeping bag and EN temperature

i've never understood why £100 and over sleeping bags lack the feature that most army bags have which is a waterproof base. I wouldn't swap my french army bag with its waterproof base and showerproof to with a chunky zip for any £200 high tech bag that would be ruined by a night sleeping rough...

    What did you buy today?

I've just ordered a pair of bobster bugeye goggles with amber lenses, for about £12 from the US. Can't wait to have sunglasses that can't break, that will keep smoke out of my eyes while tending the fire. :-) been needing a solution to that for years. Also ordered a fiskars sw75 10" saw, the...

Annual revision of first aid kit, what do you carry?

my first aid kit is a army surplus trauma pouch i got for £8, designed to hold not much more than one sealed bandage kit, so i carry that, as a provision for major injuries, plus iodine tincture, antiseptic spray, saline eyewash, a range of plasters, gauze, scissors, bandage roll, antiseptic...

    What anticeptic?

couple of things, savlon apparently gets tested on animals, so i heard. And iodine tincture is great to have in my opinion. I splash a bit on any open cuts if I'm worried about contamination, and am glad to have it as its apparently one of the most essential things to have if a nuclear fallout...

    Tick Repellant

I spent a few months living in a very heavily tick populated area, and removing ticks from dogs and people was a daily thing, I must have taken 10 or more out of my own legs and groin. We never used anything more advanced than tweezers but these are risky. The main worry is lymes disease, which...
